Default MICRO BEAD PENS

O.K., I'm seeing some gorgeous samples of pens being sent into the gallery but so far haven't seen the instructions on how to do them. I made some using double stick tape and rolling them in the micro beads but mine didn't turn out anything close to these beautiful pens. Anyone willing to share?

Default Re: Micro Bead Pens

These are quite easy and yes, they are gorgeous! You will need sticker paper and Red-Liner tape or Red-Liner paper which is sold at Michaels, or other craft and stamping stores. I am also very excited to see that the new catty has sticky tape and micro beads now!

I stamped my sticker paper with smaller images - but I've also done the daisy from Watercolor Garden and it's very pretty. Then you cut out to fit the pen and attach. Then cut the sticky tape the same length as the pen and wrap around the pen too. Peel off the red liner and roll the pen in the micro beads on a large plate. Keep rolling until the pen is thoroughly covered and there are no empty spots!

These pens are very popular with my customers - I keep some in my door prize basket for stamp camps and such!

Hope this helps!

I'm not Linda, but I used RSVP pens that I bought from Viking online.
Mine came out beautiful!

Default How To Make Stamped Beaded Pens - Supply List

What you need:

Large Plain Sticker or Label
(I like to stamp a full sheet and then cut it up to make a BUNCH of pens at once!)

Rubber Stamp(s) and Ink Pad(s)
Bic Round Stick Pen (These instructions are specific to THIS pen!)
O'So Sticky Double Sided Tape Sheet
Clear Glass Micro Beads (no hole) .5 mm size

Making Adjustments To Fit Different Pen Sizes:

These instructions are specifically tailored to fit a Bic Round Stick Pen. If you want to use another brand, all you need to do is adjust the measurements to fit THAT pen!

The easiest way to accomplish this is to start with a piece of scrap paper with the BIC measurements of 4 and 1/4? by 1 and 1/32?. Wrap this paper around the pen you wish to use and see where you need to adjust!

Be sure to add a little more to the width when you are cutting your tape – as the label adds just a smidge to the diameter of the pen and if you cut the label and tape the same size, the tape will fall short of making the full circumference!

Pens that are perfectly round and not tapered will ensure the best results!

I'd love to see the pens YOU create!!!!

Default How To Make Stamped Beaded Pens - Step By Step

How To Make Stamped Beaded Pens
© [email protected]

You are welcome to share this with your friends, but give credit where credit is due please!! ;0)

Step 1.

Place Clear Micro Beads into a Tidy Tray or dish.
Remove the lid from the pen

Step 2.

Stamp a design on the label and then cut to 4 and 1/4? by 1 and 1/32?.
This should be the exact size to wrap the label around the pen
Lengthwise and not have an overlap.

Step 3.

Peel off the backing and wrap it as straight and as tight as you can around
the pen placing it as close to the top edge (not pointed end) as possible.
This way you can still put the lid on it! A small overlap is okay.

Step 4.

Roll it on the table to ensure that it is stuck on good!

Step 5.

Cut the O'So Sticky Tape sheet to 4 and 1/4? by 1 and 1/16?.

Step 6a.

Peel away one side of the protective liner.

Step 6b.

Place it on the pen over the top of the label.
Push it together at the joining line to be sure that
there is sticky tape all the way around without a gap.

Step 7a.

Peel away the other liner and then roll the pen into the beads by pressing
firmly as you turn it making sure to fill all of the gaps and spaces.
Try not to touch the tape!

Step 7b.

You won’t be able to feel the empty spots but you can see where you need more beads if you look closely!

Step 8.

Once coated with beads, roll the pen tightly between your palms to press them into the tape and brush away any loose beads. The heat from your hands will “seat? the beads into the tape so that they will stay attached with use of the pen!

You may need to repeat Steps 7 and 8 a couple of times to get complete coverage.

Ta-Da!! Look what you made!! :0)

You're gonna get hooked - consider yourself warned!!

Okay, call me slow (would not be the frist time!) but are the beads on the outside of the barrel? All along I thought they were on the inside of the barrel until I read these instructions. Help?

Hi QueenP.
I got my email last night about the pen class and checked it out, great instructions! I placed an order right away for the sticky tape sheets and the beads. I hope I ordered the right ones, they were clear beads, the order # ended with a bunch of 0000's, did I order the right ones???

Elaine, sorry to confuse you!! There are actually TWO ways to bead a pen! The first one is an RSVP pen that is being discussed in another thread. Those pens have clear barrels and you can put the beads on the inside or the outside of those. I prefer to put colored bead mixes on the insides, since the RSVP pen is bulky as it is. But don't be fooled into trying to use imitation RSVP's if you plan to put the beads INSIDE the clear barrel - the tubes are smaller on the imitations and the beads won't fit!!

This thread is a NEW way to bead a pen! Here I am talking about using a narrower pen called a Bic Round Stick. When adding beads to the outside of this pen, it makes a perfect width for me! Plus, I love to feel the beads while I am writing - it's O'So cool! Not to mention the pens are PRETTY!! ;0)

Iris, yep! You got the right ones!! CB-OOOO those are clear beads! Did you see all the other colors we have available?? 21 in all! Cool huh? We'll get you excited about using colors in another thread one of these days,... but it's best if you get comfortable and confident with the clear beads to strart with so that they won't be something you bought and never use!

Now, the labels.... what I use are FULL sheets of laser labels, aka sticker paper. I got mine at Office Depot in the box of 100 sheets ( I think that you can buy smaller boxes - I just make ALOT of these pens so 100 sheets was what I needed! :0)

I just checked on the price and they have them on sale! I paid $30 for my box and now I see that they are about $22. Here is the link for the 100 sheet package:

http://www.officedepot.com/ddSKU.do?...&cartEntryId=0

If you don't want to tumble for the label paper - try your Xyron. Stamp on plain light weight paper - NOT cardstock!! Then put it through with the permanent adhesive cartridge in it. Be sure your paper is AT LEAST as big as the size label you need to cut though!

***Very Important **** Please note that we are only talking about using the Xyron to make the sticker label and not to adhere the beads. The adhesive in your Xyron is not thick enough to keep the beads on your pens! It will work at first -- but as soon as the adhesive dries out, all your beads will fall off!! Trust me! I've done this!!

Okay - any more questions?? Bring it on!!!! ;0)

Question about the O'so Sticky Tape. Is there a trick to get the last layer of backing off the sticky tape? What I did was remove the "heavy" layer off first and put on stamped label, then removed the "finer" plastic liner from the sticky tape. Any tricks of the trade for that final layer removal?

I did one last night and loved it!!

There are lots of different ways to try and see what works for you!

Use a pin to "lift" a corner of the tape up.
"scritch" at a corner with a finger nail until it loosens.
Gently warm with a heat tool - be careful though! Not too much!

Or just try doing it just the opposite - leave the heavy liner til last.

I've discovered that when I trim my fingernails to the quick - I REALLY struggle with peeling tape! I try harder to keep them a bit longer now! lol!

The nails are part of the problem. I get them filled and have a darn time with certain things since their a little thicker.

I'll try the pin idea, I'm sure it will work, I'm not known for my patience. If not, DH will have a job to do! LOL

Thanks

Thanks, Kathy!!

I stamped on some address labels, colored the images and stuck them to the pen. Then I put some O'SO Sticky Tape over the whole pen and rolled it in the microbeads!!

I used a Sunflower bead mix with this pen...

Equal parts of Brown Translucent, Yellow Translucent, Orange Translucent, and Clear.

I have every color of microbeads that PWA sells... I love them!!

I haven't used the SU beads - but with PWA beads you can get about 5+ pens per ounce. The tape we recommend using is in sheet form - so you can cut it out ahead of time in the right size. SU only has the 1/4" tape - so to make it work, you will need to wrap it around and around and around until the pen is covered. Not sure how many pens you can get from a roll doing that - since I've only used the sheets!

HTH!

Well... I can do at least 30 pens with a bag of clear beads from PWA. SU! is selling 1oz jars instead of 5oz bags so I would say you could safely do 5 or 6 pens. Maybe more... maybe less.

The tape we sell is red-liner so it will work just the same as PWA's O'SO Sticky Tape. You will either have to wrap it around the pen or cut it into strips and lay them side by side... you'll need 5 strips if you do it that way.

Hope that helps!!

Default Beaded Pens

Don't forget to try our own Sticky Strip from SU. Start straight and then Just wind it around the pen at a slight angle. It works great with our new micro beads.

Default FREE Sticky paper

Ladies,

This is probably a naughty little no-no, but I just found a great source of FREE sticky paper for making these. Those Priority Mail labels from the post office. I used to be an Ebay seller, so I have gobs of them around the house and you can get at least two pens out of one. I'm just trying them with my first pen now, so I can't vouch for how well, they stick, but it seems worth a try! Just don't tell Uncle Sam - shhh!

Ohhh, i have to rave some more!!

She also sends you the directions on how to make the beaded pens, how to bead the inside of an RSVP pen, how to make a shaker card (with a pattern) and all you need to know about the o'so sticky tape!!!

then on top of that you get a pretty little note saying thank you, it is hand stamped and HAND SIGNED with it addressed to me personally!

I thought that was such a fantastic touch that they take the time out to do that AND get it to me in two shipping days!!!

THANK YOU PENNYWISE!!!!!

It's not a dumb question at all!! When you put beads INSIDE the pen, there is no need for tape! Just leave the cap on the inky side of the pen and unscrew the little tip from the other end. Make sure the ink cartridge is still all the way down inside the barrel of the pen, and then add the beads! I make a little funnel out of a scrap of paper to get them down in there. It only takes about 1/4 of a teaspoon to do a pen too! Then screw the little tip back on tightly and Vwaaala!
