You probably could use a transfer sheet- I ruined a canvas using an iron on transfer sheet- the iron left marks and kept getting caught on the canvas frame. I have used just thin photo paper to do my canvases- just make sure the photos are dry and be careful not to smudge if using Modge Podge.

Here is a link to my gallery, I just finished a 16x20 canvas. I didn't to use modge podge on mine because I had layers. I used photos I printed myself on good photo paper. I inked the canvas with colorbox chalk ink then used making memories specialty glaze (gold) to highlight some areas & let dry a day. I applied a rub on and inked the flourishes using black stazon. For my main photo I covered a 5x7 thin canvas board with pattern paper, mat the main picture and poped it with 3d dots to add demension. I used glue dots to attach everything. I bought my canvas from Michaels but I made sure it was the one that didn't show the staples along the side edge were the canvas has been attached.

Smile I would use the photo if I did it again

I used a photo copy of an 8X10 photo and transfer medium gel to transfer it to canvas. I found when I wet the paper and tried to peel it off the plastic coating stretched leaving cracks in the photo. It took a lot of time because the gel had to dry between the 3 of 4 coats and I didn't get the effect I wanted.. I would just use the original photo next time. Decopage would adhere the photo to the painted canvas.
