Question "Out of the Box" Technique

Can anybody tell me where to go to get directions for this technique? Is there a TLC for it, or where can I find some directions/examples?

Thanks a million!

'Out of the box' refers to when parts of an image are cut out and extend beyond the borders of a square, circle, rectangle, etc. shape.
Here are some examples Christmas Joy and Little Things

Hope that helps!
