I have done this with my 4 year old and we had a great time using scraps.

Here is what I did with her...

materials:
3 paper bags
told her to pick her favorite 2 colors (thank God they coordinated! lol!)
pick a theme (flowers, bunnies, teddy bears... something that was her)
ribbon

Here's how we did it:
1. place paper bags on top of each other with open ends pointing to the left and right (make sense?)
2. fold bags in half to make a crease
3. sewed bags together with sewing machine down the middle ( you can staple it here but I didn't have a stapler that would reach that far in)
4. the part of the bag that folds out when you fill it- just tack that down with some glue
5. I did cut the other ends when they were sewn together so she had more pockets to put secret messages to her grandma in lol!
6. fold in half again after being sewn together and punch holes for the ribbon to go through (I have a leather punch I used but you can use an anywhere punch)
7. The front and back of the book did have a piece of cardstock that covered the paper bag but the inside was all pieced with my scraps- it did turn out pretty cute since it was really all one color she chose

binding:
you can staple it together after it is folded and cover with a strip of cs like you see composition books covered- make sure you use a good adhesive!!

you can punch holes in it and then run pretty ribbons through it

use fabric the same way you would as cs

inside: decorate as you wish- that's the fun of it all!!!

pockets: saved for hidden secrets, photos, baseball cards...sky is the limit!

I hope all this rambling helped

Default Just a suggestion

Instead of staples or ribbon I used paper fasteners the kind you'd see in those file folders lika at the office. They are much more sturdier than the other stuff.
