Question Versamagic or Chalk Box on Glossy CS

I saw a beautiful card in the gallery by Beate, titled Night Flowers. She sanded glossy black CS for the faux linen look, then stamped with VersaMagic ink. I tried the technique without sanding first, and used Chalk Box inks instead of VersaMagic. It took forever to dry; I finally used the heat gun. The next day, it felt and looked dry, but still smeared. I sprayed it with "Carolyn's Scrapbook Protectant spray (it's acrylic), which dulled the shine on the CS. I love the look of the chalk ink on the shiny CS - what am I doing wrong? Do I need to use VersaMagic instead of Chalk Box? Or should I use a different spray? Or am I trying to do the impossible?
