very basic cardmaking question...
 

I am a longtime scrapper, but a newbie to cardmaking (I've made just a few). Here's my question...

Let's say that I am starting with a white card and I have covered the front with patterned paper. Then I use a brad directly on the front of my card and it goes through to the inside of the card. Do I then cover the inside with another layer of paper in order to cover up the backside of the brad? When I have done this, it seems lumpy, but it seems like it would be unsightly if I didn't.

I hope that makes sense! Its just that when pictures are posted in the gallery they show the front of the card and the inside sentiment part of the card, but not the non-sentiment part of the inside. Yikes, that was wordy! Thanks for your help!

Everyone is different here, but I really try to avoid the backs of brads showing inside my card.

So I generally make the card front and then layer it on a base at the very end.

Sometimes if I'm working with flimsier paper or half sheets, I add another layer in so that I can tuck ribbons behind it, and brad backs, etc.

So - I never "start with a white card" - I do everything else and add the base last.

Yep. Everyone's different. I think it's nice to NOT have the brad showing inside, but saying that, it's better NOT to have a little piece of paper covering it.....unless you had a bunch of circles on the front & used a circle punched out to cover it inside.

When I think about it, I usually start on the focal point & work backwards, down to the base card. Just depends on the card. But I DO normally have a basic idea in mind.

When I first became a demonstrator, I didn't even know that you were supposed to HAVE layers on a card so you're ahead of the game already!

Perhaps you'd like to layer your patterned cardstock onto a piece of coordinating colored cardstock for a border and THEN onto your card front so that you'd have 2 borders.

sometimes if i just want a one layer card, etc, then i just deal with having a brad on the inside of my card. but as the above ladies have said, i usually use more than one layer and attach the brad to one of those so that it doesnt go through to the card base and therefore is not visible on the inside of the card.

sometimes i think seeing the "legs" of the brad inside the front cover of card adds to the handmade feel of a card.....shows it's not factory mass produced and also adds to the reality of the brad.....not just a stick on element.....just my humble onions

I layer my cardstock so the brad legs won't show through on the inside of the card. Of course now, this comes with careful planning in the pre-stage cardmaking process, which always doesn't happen with me. I try to lay everything out first before I glue and that way I pretty much know if I want or need a brad if it's not in the original card LO.

I try to hide the brads also but if one shows the recipient will still love getting a handmade card! Aren't they fun to use? I'm so hooked! Right now I'm working on fall cards using the earth element matching brads. I love the matchy matchy!!

Another quickie cheater way to add a brad to a non-layered card is to cut off the 'legs' with wire cutters and adhere it to the front with a glue dot or really strong adhesive.

Thanks for this great tip. :) I honestly never have thought about doing that, but it's a great way to debulk (is that a word lol) my cards and scrapbook pages!

If you've already made the card, you can always cover the brad legs with a punched embellishment that matches the inside of the card.

I agree. I like the fact that I've added a personal touch to it and no one seems to mind although I have added brads to some layered cardstock too on the front cover.

I don't like the brad legs showing so I just cut them off with my scissors....

Um, then don't your brads just fall off?? :confused:

Thank you for all of the great answers. Now I "get" it! I'm so glad I found this website. The checker at our local hardware store saw my tombo tape purchase and we got to talking and she recommended this site. Funny how things happen :) Cindy
