Using SU Slit Punch

I purchased the SU split punch with big eyes, but now I can't get it to work. I'm definitely mathematically challenged. How do I line up the slit so that it's even on all sides? Thanks in advance!

Here is JulieHRR's thread for using the slit punch: http:////www.splitcoaststampers.com/...punch+tutorial
To make a scallop border with it, you have to take the guard off. You need a strip of cardstock. The scallops will be punched onto the opposite side of the cardstock.
