Tutorial for Creating Woodgrain Paper

I posted a tutorial on my blog showing an easy and fun way to create woodgrain/barnboard paper.

here it is: Snippets: Woodgrain Tutorial

Wow, that is an awesome technique! Thank you so much for sharing! <3

Covington Crafter 01-16-2016 11:19 AM

Thanks Karen, great tutorial. I'll be sure to try this!

poppydarling 01-16-2016 11:50 AM

Love it! What makes the "knots"? Is it the darker ink over the blobs of glue?

stormhockeymom 01-16-2016 11:57 AM

beautiful card... thanks for sharing!

yes, it is just the glue blobs with ink on them

poppydarling 01-16-2016 02:51 PM

Tried it and love it! Mine isn't as perfect as yours but I'll keep practicing. What a great tutorial!

Very cool! I don't have an embossing machine and have seen ways to emboss this look but now I can make it without the machine!

Guess what I'm going to be doing tomorrow? It's freezing here so it will be a good project to play with!

Karen, what a fantastic tutorial. Thanks for sharing!

I had to smile when I read the following in your instructions:

"I found it best to apply the ink in the same direction as the scoring."

You DO know when working with wood, it's always best to work with the grain. (My husband was a mighty fine wood-worker, and this bit of information was drilled into my head. He would be proud! :) )

Wow, what a fabulous tutorial!
I can't wait to give this a try!

I think that's the beauty of this technique...you don't need to have a lot of extra tools or supplies!

giggle...yes my DH works with wood too! and I know you have to 'go with the grain'.

prairiecrafter 01-17-2016 05:45 AM

Thank you for sharing this. I will have to try it. Always looking for good background for a masculine card.

....and it is awesome for masculine cards!

Karen, after inking the glue, is your glue still shiny? I did thin strands of Elmers craft glue, which is clear out of the bottle, but I'm thinking maybe a white glue won't show as much? I didn't ink as heavily as you did so maybe that might cover the shine more. You only see it at certain angles, though...

uncbballfan 01-17-2016 10:57 AM

Gorgeous version today too! I love the look of old barn wood.

So the colors you used for this one? Weathered Wood, I'm assuming and ???

yes, my glue was thick and I literally slopped it on.

It's amazing - the colors are so beautiful!

Savagetwin 01-18-2016 06:21 PM

Amazing technique that is a must try. After I put glue on paper, do I brush over it? TIA

I just brushed it on in random lines..not over the whole piece...leave open areas.

I haven't uploaded my card but I just want to say Thanks so much for the tutorial! Made a practice layer yesterday and loved it so much I made a card, too. Mine is a doe and fawn as the focal point and the woodgrain paper looks so cool. Put a brown velvet ribbon on the side, now I have to decide who's going to be the lucky one to get the card! LOL! :p

Your color combinations are really nice, Kathy. This technique is so versatile especially for a masculine card which are always hard for me to do. Love the truck stamp!

As usual, I'm late to the party, but wanted to thank you for this wonderful mini-tutorial! I can't believe you even got knot holes. : )
