I read that stumps can be sharpened with an emery board. When I tried this mine got fuzzy on the ends and are not as sharp and pointy as I would like. I am using stumps and not tortillions. What are all you gamsol gals using to keep your stumps sharp? TIA
I am using the tortillons and the emery board also. I was not pleased with the result I got after sanding it though. I've decided as cheap as they are, I may just start replacing them after the tip is worn down.

I like the stumps better than the torillions (however you spell it) mainly because they are longer and don't get icky. I trim mine with my Fiskars and that seems to work well.
Would you find gamsol with the turpentine & painting supplies? Or does it need to be special ordered? I thought I'd look for some next time I go to AC Moore. -Jen

Gamsol is a product name from Gamblin. It is odorless mineral spirits but it is also an art grade product and purchasing something from a building supply place would not be the same. Michael's (and maybe AC moore.......don't know about them....never been in one) carries Mona Lisa Odorless Mineral Spirits and I have found it works fine.
As for the stumps..................I've been playing with them for at least six months and have yet to sharpen any of mine. I have trimmed them a little with scissors but not much. I have dedicated each end of the stump to a specific color group and clean it by coloring on plain paper until no color shows. My stumps are made in China.....haven't found any of the others yet.

I have both those made in China and those made in Taiwan.....I like the ones made in China....I think because I have such a heavy hand and the small (#1) stump made in taiwan bends....I believe that because I first used the ones made in China those are the ones I will gravitate to.....the tortillions collapse in my power grip. Sometimes I don't even know my own strength lol.
Thanks for the tips of how to trim the gamsol stumps. Mine got all fuzzy when I used the emergy board, too. I trimmed the end with sizzors but felt like I did a terrible thing. lol. Glad to hear that I didn't destroy it!
