sorry if this is a dumb question that EVERYONE else knows the answer to but me... i just received some metal edge tags - do you punch out the paper to stamp and then replace it in the metal edge? some of the samples i've seen look like they must be stamped outside the tag and then put back in. thanks for your help...

My advice to you is not to inquire why or whither, but just enjoy your ice cream while it's on your plate. Thornton Wilder
Metal edge tags are so cool. Sets like Figures of Speech and Daisy Days are make just for the tags. I have seen the paper takes out and the metal crimped or the paper takes out and just the tag used. They are versital.
You were not the only one with this question on your mind. I'd been using a circle cutter to punch the design; then layering it onto the tag. I'm going to try the other way! Crimping the metal would be cool too! Thanks for asking about it so we could all learn from it
I usually just layer but I have also stamped directly on the paper with a large solid image, taken the paper off and placed the metal over a prevously stamped image or attached vellum behind the frame. I wouldn't know how to put paper back in, can anyone explain?

Once the paper is out, it is out. No getting it back in. If you are using colored cardstock metal rimmed tags, you can also punch (say baby rattle) through the tag and then place a piece of white (or other color) cardstock behind the tag. That will highlight the punch and allow for a place to write on the back of the tag.
I've done both ways. I've stamped a scrap piece and punched it out to stick on the tag, and I've stamped directly on the tag itself. The only problem is that if you mess up, you're out a tag. I bet that's how the idea of taking the paper out and using just the metal rim got started!
I've tried to crimp the metal tags with NO success, is there a secret to doing it?? I would love to know. I have seen them crimped and it is a really neat look. But I must not be doing something right.....I dunno.
Try making your own tags - not quite the "real thing", but certainly a good alternative and much cheaper.
I have 2 circle punches, one slightly larger than the other, and punch the larger one on silver cardstock (or any color you choose). Computer generate, write or stamp your word(s) or single letters if you wish from an Alphabet stamp set onto white paper, turn the small punch over and slide it over the paper with the words on it, position the words centrally, then punch. Glue the smaller word circle to the larger silver card circle. Punch a small hole at the top for thread or cord, and voila ...... You can do a whole pile of these at a time - different words or single letters in different fonts and colors - and then keep them for when you need them.
Give it a try ...

I do the "faux" tags as well-but to add to the look you can roll the edge of the tag in versamark and use silver ep so it is actually a raised silver edge!
