Shirt/pants pocket on a card.
 

I love to stamp, but admit to being "measuring challenged" when it comes to certain designs. I have seen numerous cards with a pocket (like a shirt or pants pocket) that have banners, flowers, etc. coming out of them. After several attempts at cutting out an even pocket, here I am!

Would anyone be willing to share a template, instructions, etc on how to cut out a pocket to put on the front of a card?

I"m not exactly sure what you're trying to do. If I understood a bit more, maybe I could help. Are you having trouble downsizing something that will be proportionate?

Denverkat276, I should have been clearer in what I was trying to do. I would like to make a pocket like the one in this link entitled "banner blast card" Laura's Works of Heart: MORE BANNER BLAST CARDS:. Just working freehand, I can't seem to get the darn thing to be proportional!

Any measurements, patterns, templates, etc. would be greatly appreciated.

I have an idea, I'm just heading out and will be back in a few ours.... promised my grandsons an afternoon at the skate park. If someone jumps in before I get back that's cool, but I do have an idea.

I often cut fabric pockets long after I've lost the pattern piece. Start with a rectangle about the size you want - if you don't have a centring ruler it's good to start with something that you can easily work out half the width - so if it's 3 inches wide, you draw a line (on the back) down the centre at 1 1/2" inches. 3" x4" would be a good size to try.

Then, depending on how angled you want it to be, draw a line about 1/2" above the base. Draw lines from the bottom centre mark up to the 1/2" line, which gives you the angled bottom. Cut...
Actually, I often don't bother with actually measuring it and drawing the lines - since I use a gridded cutting mat on my work-desk I just use that.
If that's not clear, I'll try to add a drawing tomorrow, but I've turned off the PC which is attached to the scanner.

Cook22, you would think that after sewing/stamping/crafting, etc. for many years that I could follow your directions! I tried and I ended up with a very beautiful triangle - lol!

I wonder if there might be a tutorial that is visually understandable on Youtube. I think Cook got it, but I think you are visual and maybe need a video. I'll look today and see if I can find one.

Next time you are throwing out a shirt or pair of pants cut the pocket off first to save as a template.

Anytime I'm trying to make a template from scratch I use graph paper. It was left over from one of my son's math classes.

Graph paper is a really good idea for templates. It sure would simplify the measuring. Thank you for the tip!

Wouldnt cutting the bottom of a pocket be like the opposite of cutting out the indent for a banner?

Meaning, you mark the middle of the strip and cut from the two corners to the mark for a banner right?

Reverse that. Mark 1/2 inch straight line on back of paper square. Then a middle dot on the bottom edge. Then cut from the line on each side edge to the dot to form a point.

Make sense?

A shirt pocket (that isnt a western shirt) is a square with no point.

The example you showed us is a rectangle (almost a square) with the two bottom corners cut off. Depending on the size, just mark on the back of it with a ruler where you want to make the cuts.(ie 1/2 inch in each direction then connect the dots and cut) I think the mock double stitch with the white pen on the top makes it look like a pocket a lot as well as the denim looking paper.

But really the minute you stick something "in it" it becomes a pocket. :) If you want it to "pop" a bit, I suggest a square, cut 1/8"- 1/4" diagonal from the two bottom corners, fold the edge under the two sides, then the bottom (dont do the top) glue the edges to the base card and Viola! a pocket to hold stuff like a gift card. You could use a tape runner.
