Shaker Cards: What do you use for making the box?
 

Hello all,
I've just made my first shaker card, turned out great if I do say so myself! But.... I'm wondering what you all have found to use for making the box part ( or the raised sides to keep stuff inside - do you know what I mean?) I used Peel'n'Stick Sticky strips foam strips that I cut to length. But they were really quite expensive for the amount I got. Are there any other things to use or tricks of the trade to learn? Thanks guys!!!!

Depends on how thick you want it. You can use fun foam or foam core board cut to size.

I use the rubber and foam from the stamps you cut out,or just use the foam pieces. Its depends on the height of the box you want.

I use Scotch heavy duty mounting tape. It has just enough thickness and if you need more, you can just layer it!

I use dimensionals. Just put them right next to each other. Works great.

I use the Scotch mounting tape also. Depending on what I put inside, I sometimes layer mine too. Works for me! Office Depot has the best price I have found on it.

I save the tops of plastics containers you get with your brads, etc.and then just put a stamped decorated backing on it. Most of those containers are fairly flat and are perfect for shaker cards and how many have we thrown out?

Save some money and go to the dollar store and pick up some two way foam tape. You can't beat that price and it works just fine. If it's too wide for the frame just cut with an exacto knife while it's still on the roll. It doesn't matter if the inside is a straight cut or not.

Lay your clear material down on the frame first and put half the tape on the clear piece and other half on the cardstock. To avoid any sticky just rub it with powder, cornstarch or your embossing buddy on the inside and then on the outside edges after you've completed the card.

But before I get the scrapbooking police on me don't forget; don't use in scarpbooking because it may not be acid free.

What dollar store do you find the two way foam tape at? Thanks in advance for your help!

I see two way foam tape at almost every dollar store I go in here in Michigan. I'm always looking for the thin two way tape but have only found it in the stores twice but they always seen to have the foam style. You have to look in tool and household section not in crafts.

I use the sheets of kids foam that you get at craft stores. You can just cut them into the strip size you need then apply some adhesive. A month or so ago Joanns had the sheets of 11x14 for 50 cents each. There are different thicknesses to choose from too.

Hi, I use fun foam and my sizzix die cuts to make my cards. I love using the sizzix frames to make shakers. I hope this helps!!!

When I buy some new "brads" at the craft store, i save the clear package it comes in. It works great for a shaker card.

Someone told me once to use window weatherstripping....it's totally cheap and self adhesive. DO NOT US IT FOR SHAKERS though....the beads (or whatever) stick to the sides because it's sticky on ALL sides, not just the top and bottom. It works great as a dimensional though. I use self adhesive foam tape now.

Just a little tip if you want to use it for a shaker card just rub the sides with a powder. Body powder, cornstarch or even the embossing buddy should kill the sticky. I do this even with the foam tape so it doesn't catch all the micro beads.

I use foam board. I cut out to the size I want finished. Then I cut an opening in the center with an exacto knife. I use double sided tape to adhere to my card. Works great and easy to do.

You can ask at Michaels and other stores that have display signs made from foam board and see if they will let you have the signs when they throw them away. They change out signs for displays as seasons change.

Get to know the right person and you will have a great contact. Makes for free foam board for use for classes. Just turn over and have the printed side down so it doesn't show through cardstock.
