Polished Stone?!
I have been seeing a couple of beautiful cards using the polished stone technique and I'm curious about what that is. I checked the SU! website and wasn't able to find anything. Is anyone familiar with this?

I have seen it, and it looks really neat, but haven't tried it myself. Someone else help us out!

I have used the polished stone technique and taught it at my make & takes and it was a huge success! On a quarter sheet of white glossy cardstock dab dots of gold or silver metallic reinkers randomly on the surface. Then using a cotton ball dipped in rubbing alchol (this is the tricky part-not too much-squeeze out excess), add 3 to 4 drops of your color choice or our classic reinders. Now pounce the cotton ball all over the the surface of the glossy CS. Metallic ink should blend some with the alchol and reinkers and form lines similar to marble. Expermint! You may have to add more color or alchol to the cotton ball if it doesn't seem to cover the entire surface. You might have to pounce a little harder or slightly rub the metallic dots if they don't spread out in a marble pattern. After it is dry you will need to spray the surface with hair spray. I've also tried using two colors. Either put both colors on the cotton ball to begin with or go back over surface with second color. You can stamp right on the surface or use as a background. I used silver with Rose Red for Valentine cards. They looked great! Hope this helps! Judy Arnell

Judy is right. This is a very easy technique and produces stunning results. One word of caution about using hair spray. Make sure it does not have a high alcohol content or your polished stone will turn into river mud. I found this out the hard way by teaching it to a friend. We had these beautiful red, white and blue polished stone pieces, sprayed them with her daughter's hair spray and they washed away  I usually used Krylon acrylic sealer on mine, but still use hair spray also.

I finally did this technique last night with a friend... Beautiful :D
I couldn't find any denatured alcohol so I tried regular 70% isopropyl alcohol and I didn't like the results so I got some 91% isopropyl alcohol and it worked like a charm!! We tried to use Marvy Metallic markers but they didn't spread and vein like the Krylon Leafing pens. I also used the Krylon finishing spray. We did so much experimenting with colors... and layering the colors!! I really like to use both gold and silver with the reinkers - and using gold and silver with the black reinker is just stunning!! Just wanted to mention that if you LOVE techniques you might want to join Pat Huntoon's Technique Junkie Newsletter Every other month she sends out a WONDERFUL color newsletter with GREAT techniques... but what's really great is you get access to a members only portion of her website where she has pictured step-by-step very detailed instructions on how to do each month's technique!! If you're interested just go to her website... www.patstamps.com. Mary |

Hi,
My hostess this thursday wants polished stone and after reading this post I decided to go for it. Well, I had so much fun, it was much easier than I thought. My 5yo son was watching me and decided he wanted to play too. His card turned out great! He had no trouble at all. If you haven't done this yet go for it. I got the 91% alchol at Target for less than a dollar. I couldn't find the other type. We sealed our cards with the krylon workable fixative. It didn't take away fromthe gloyys finish of the cardstock at all. |
