I think I've read on other threads.........talking covering items other than clipboards.......that you should apply the MP to the back of the paper...otherwise you get bubbles. Not sure that helps you....?
Thin even coat - that is the key. You also have to work quickly so that areas of the glue do not dry more than others before you put the paper down.
I usually put a coat on using a wide wash brush (the bushy flatter kind) then before I lay the paper down on top o go over the entire thing in one direction to ensure that the glue is all still equally wet. Then lay the paper on and smooth it out - a bone folder works great here. DO that quickly then apply another layer of it on top of the paper. Again thin even coat.
What causes the paper to wrinkle and bubble is that it expands when it gets WET so if you have so much glue that the paper expands then it will bubble. I think just knowing that helps! Kind of like mind over matter or something!

modge podge is one of those mediums that you have to apply just the right amount...with thicker papers, there is a GREATER tendency for bubbling to occur.
I am starting on my first altered clipboard. I painted the surface with lumiere. It is now very dry. I want to do layers, sort of decoupage style, and finish with a layer of Modge. I have run some of my images through the Xyron and put them down on the board. Will they stay down after I put the final layers of glaze and Modge? TIA
yeah...what i did is covered the covered the clipboard with modge podge then applied the paper then let it dry then put modge podge on top
I did the same thing and had the same problem. VERY frustrating! Then when I took a class, she didn't modge podge at all, but just used spray on adhesive, but I wasn't as satisfied with the results there either some of the items still wanted to come off later. I would be interested in some comments too. I heard to water the modge podge down to a much thinner version. I hope you hear soon, and would love to know what you find works.

It might be interesting with the xyron under and mod podge on top. I would not be surprised if it does bubble. just put it on very very light thin coat and it should minimize the bubbles.

Thanks for the advice. I remember when I first started out doing decoupage some thirty years ago, ouch, we used varnish and smelly stuff like that. It worked well. I still have that box I made. Wish I'd known then that I should probably not have been using that stuff while pregnant. I think it would be better to use the stuff we have today like Modge.
Use Mod Podge and just use thin coats as was suggested. The Xyroned paper bubbled when I applied a paint/glaze. Yuck! I'll stick to the older slower way. Thought you might be interested in this experiment. Maybe if I hadn't put the glaze on, just Mod Podge would have worked better.
