Masking?

I think that's what it's called...when you use paper to "color" an image. How do you do that?? It seems like it would be hard to cut it out perfectly!

Paper piecing is when you use patterned paper or a different color paper to color an image. One of the most popular ways to do this is by using patterned paper for a dress on a girl image. Depending on the stamp--it can be easy or tedious to cut out. You stamp the stamp on the patterned paper and then cut out the part you want to be the pattern (I usually cut just outside the line). And then adhere it on your image (stamped on another piece of paper).


Masking is using a temporary piece of paper to cover the project to keep a part of an image from stamping or ink from covering (like from sponging). Post-it notes are very good for this.

If you are interested in paper piecing (using patterned paper for part of a stamped image) I have two suggestions to make it a little easier. You are right that it is hard to cut out the pieces exactly -- I have found it to be easier when I emboss the image, as opposed to just stamping it with ink. That way I can get really close to the lines, but the raised embossing powder serves as a guide. Also make sure you have really good, smallish, sharp scissors that will cut all the way through their tip easily. Stampin'Up's paper snips or those bumblbee looking scissors (by fiskars, maybe?) work a whole lot better than larger scissors with thicker blades.
