Peeps Jars
Wandering through the dollar store today I saw all of the cute little peeps! New colors, too. Has anyone actually made AND eaten the s'mores jar cookies that were so popular last year? Thinking of doing these for a camp and/or doorprize. I love real s'mores, but peeps - bleck - all that crusty sugar without chocolate gratification eeewww. I don't want to give or make gifts that are cute but yucky, so am looking for some feedback.

I have actually eaten them in a moment of weakness. Not bad at all!

What? I can't imagine someone not liking Marshmellow Peeps!! I *heart* PEEPS! |
hi, i made them in the fall for my pastor and the kids teacher with the pumpkin peeps. I didn't try them, but everyone of the teachers/pastor raved about how wonderful they tasted. I got a system going and it didn't take me long to fill up 12 jars and decorate them. I tied a square piece of fall fabric around the top of the jar with raffia and then attached a stamped tag with the recipe on the back. very cute! Debra
|
Oooh! Could I have the recipe, pretty please? DH LOVES peeps almost as much as he loves s'mores!
|
I love Peeps...but I can see why some people wouldn't like them because they really are just sugar. I have a horrible sweet tooth. Worse than loving Peeps is my mom who loves them when they are VERY stale. She will buy them and unwrap them then just wait for them to get stale. Guess everyone has their wierdness!!!

Two of the women I used to work with LOVED peeps. I used to bring them in (different colors for each) and cringe while they devoured them. Ick. I haven't seen them in a while - the peeps jar would be a fun gift to make for them. Off to look for the recipe.

Yes, Please share!!! I would love to have this too! Maggi in NY
|
Yes, please! Point us to the recipe! This will be PERFECT for a bake sale I need to do in a few weeks. It is during Lent, so people may not want to buy very many premade items. I think these would be a huge hit! (I'm also making beaded pens and nugget purses; the purses were a hit a few weeks ago at a bake sale.)
Thanks so much for your help!!! |
Ok, found it! Here's the Peep Show thread. I can't wait to try this. :D
|
...oh, and my cat LOVES Peeps! He doesn't like cat treats, but if you are eating a peep, he will smell it from 4 rooms away and pounce on you to get at the peep!! Crazy!
|
Here are some great examples of Peep jars.
|
mmmmmm...Peeps. And I am definitely in the wierd category I guess, as I also unwrap and wait for them to get stale. I won't turn them down when they are fresh, but am much happier when they are stale....go figure. Not like I did not already know I was a little off, nor is it ever a surprise to anyone else.

I like putting them in the microwave and nuking them for a bit - they grow HUGE and then deflate... and turn rock hard (sugar crystalizes). My nephew thinks it's the coolest thing - he's 18 now, yet every Easter dinner, he and I blow up a box of peeps. Yes, we are odd! (p.s. we don't eat them)

STephanie LOL! Me and my mom both do the same thing! They are so good when they are kind of hard and chewy! You all should try it:-D |
Ok, add me to the weird list . . . stale peeps are the BEST!! I know Target has their peeps out so I'd bet Walmart does too. Now I have a good excuse to go buy some!
|
i love peeps.. and alittle stale is best....but i have a hard time waiting for them....
an easy way to make a peep cake is make the cake as directed on the cake mix.. add in m and m's about 1/2 cup... top with peeps and bake.. the peeps melt into the cake and it is so moist and delicious.. i want to try that but wait 1/2 the way through the baking to put them on.. but i am not sure how that will be.. |
One year we decided to roast peeps over a campfire--big mistake! The sugar burned and they got all black and crusted. (It was fun, though!)
|
I made Peeps jars last year- they were TOO TOO cute... I keep one to bake & I thought the bars were just OK- although they did get good reivews from the teachers I gave them to.
The Peeps cake totally intrigues me! I need more info.... is it just that you make a white cake- add M&Ms- then put peeps on top- and bake? I think that would make an adorable peeps jar.... Is that the right idea? :) Linda |
I myself can't stand the things, but I believe I just found my door prize for my class in March and April!! TFS ladies!

I made halloween peep jars. I used pumpkin and ghost peeps, fabric on the top, and stamped a large cute tag with baking directions on the back. I sold them for $7 a jar. I made about $2.50 profit I think. The jars looked wonderful. The baked peeps were okay. Too rich and very gooey. I put them in the fridge but that made them hard to get out of the pan. I felt like I should just go ahead and staple them right onto my stomach because that was where all the fat was going... if I didn't have a sugar related heart attack first. Food doesn't usually bother me- I love it. I just had a hard time with the peep dessert. But alas, I plan to make them again for Easter sales. I sell my stuff to make money to buy more stamps. I just wish I could make them cheaper.

Yesterday at Target I bought Cocoa Peeps..........they were so cute in a creamy caramel color! Ate the box............yup, sure did!
|
and here I sit going . . . ewwwwwwwwww! LOL!!!
altho I have never even eaten one. |
Add me to the "stale peeps" fan club. Better stale than fresh.

I read on one of these threads that buying all the ingrediants actually added up to quite a bit of money......Has anyone else found that to be true??
I'd like to just make 6-7 for teachers and some neighbors. |
craftymomof3, I had to laugh when I read your post. Growing up as kids we only knew of stale Peeps. My dad would buy them when he first saw them in the stores, would take a knife and put slits in the plastic wrap and put them on the shelf in his closet to cure before Easter. I continue the tradition with my kids. They don't like fresh peeps.
|
I love peeps & since I was allergic to milk as a kid, I did not get the chocolate everyone else did (I got skittles, starburst, and peeps)!!
Now I see the recipe for the peeps jars, this would make a good idea for me to do for the teachers at my stepsons school. But I have a questions, using the recipe to make the peeps bars??? What on earth do these taste/look like...can anyone describe this to me. |
I think I am the only person in the world that does not like these. As a kid, they were always in my Easter Basket and I always gave them to my sister. I do think the Peep Jars are just adorable - I might just have to make them.

Some days, when you push my tummy, I giggle too!
Is this thread getting as stale as some of your Peeps, or can you stand another comment? I have tried, as I'm sure most moms have, to like Peeps for the sake of my kids, but um ..... I prefer to simply rinse my mouth with brown sugar after having eaten a mountain of sugar cubes!
Anyway, another neat idea for Easter is "Empty Tomb" treats. Anyone know of these? At one MOPS session last year, the receipe was passed around, but I can't seem to find it to pass along to you. I know the basics though - Pillsbury crescent rolls and large marshmallows. You wrap a marshmallow inside a crescent roll segment and bake it (can't remember at what temp/for how long). When the crescent rolls cool and are edible, the marshmallow has "disappeared". :o It's a nice reference to Jesus' rising from the dead and kids can help make these while getting a visual understanding of the whole concept. If anyone is interested, I can get the directions to pass along.:p |

I'd like to just make 6-7 for teachers and some neighbors. Yeppers - I was going to make the jars with kids in a workshop during March break up here (spring break down there) and I gave up - the M & M's were so pricey here - needed almost one whole bag per jar, and then add the graham crackers - pricey here too. So, I decided IF I do this that I would just use cello bags and add a couple of graham wafers, a chocolate bar, and a couple of peeps to make their own S'more kit. |
