I have tried nail polish, Krylon crystal clear spray acrylic coater and crystal effects to coat my dominoes and everything smears. I am using black staz-on and either sanding the dominoes or using gesso first and nothing is helping. Any suggestions? [/b]

sealing
The trick is to spray at a distance and very light coats. If you do this several times, they will be sealed and won't run. Be patient. If you spray too close or too soon together, it will run.
Also, did you take the gloss off of the domino? I know when I did that it seemed to work great. I used staz-on and chalks. I had no problem with smearing.
I use versamark and then clear ultra thick embossing powder and then heat it on my magnets and not only does it have less fumes, but it works so easy. I am sot sure it would work on dominoes, but it is worth a try. Also, make sure you heat set the Staz on, before you do any of this . . . HTH, Amanda!
I soaked mine in bleach for about an hour then rinsed them they are gloss free. They have a nice finish for stamping now.
I do know that I heard if you use a water based ink to use a alcohol based spray and visversa.
what do you do if you stamp in alcohol based stazon and color in with water based markers??
I too soak my dominoes in bleach. I have a large mayo jar that I drop dominoes in. I usually leave them over night. Then I rinse really well and let them sit out to dry. They are so pourous by then that it makes stamping a breeze.
I read a great article in the Spring 2004 issue of Bel Amoire magazine. It isn't a mag that I would normally buy, but got it specifically because it featured an article on Vicki Sele. She owns A Country Welcome and has her own line of stamps specifically for dominoes, call "Oh Domino". The article is about her beautiful belts made from dominoes and she shares her whole process. She also puts her dominoes in bleach overnight.
Would you believe that she seals her dominoes with. . would you believe. . . Future Floor Finish. I started doing that and it is SO GREAT. I take a small flat paint brush and brush on at least three coats, letting it thoroughly dry between. She said you could spray it on, but if I do that I always get puddles on the sides. If you brush it, brush long ways on the first coat, short ways on the second, etc.
I was limited to making domino pins because the Indiana weather meant I could only spray nasty acrylic finish when the temp is above a certain point. CANNOT do it in the house. This has solved my problem and the dominoes are sparkly beautiful!
What a great idea. I'm gonna have to try and find that article. Now, I do have a question, is Future floor wax water soluble?
StampinPixie, you are one of the many that live in Indy. That is where I want to live. My dh is from there and we were suppose to end up there last year. I even had my house picked out.
I would assume that wax is not water soluble. You have to have "stripper" to get wax off of floors. And you put wax on your car to repel water. Future does say Future Floor Finish, not wax. On the front and back of the label it says "tough acrylic finish".
I've lived in Indy all my life. My DH was born in Chicago & lived all over the world, so I'm lucky that he ended up here. (High tech engineering job lured him in. hahhahah)
Thank you Stampindixie. I'll have to try the Future floor finish. Now to find some time tonight to stamp. I wish I didn't have school. Uugh!!
My dh is from Logansport, in the country. We were looking at a house in West Lafayette, near Purdue. I found a house there that I loved. However, we were considering Carmel, Fishers, Nobles..., and out by Greenwood. One of my best buds lives out there.
Thanks so much for all your replies. I tried not spraving very closely and it still smeared as the spray settled. I then tried car wax because I couldn't find Future Floor Finish (where should I buy it?) I was about to give up and then I tried versamark with crystal clear EP and that works well. I also used glassy gloss which worked and irredesent ice looks cute. I still get smears when trying to color in the lines of the staz on though , even though I heat set it. I'm going to soak some in bleach tonight to see if that makes a difference.
some of my stamping group were encountering the same problem but on tiles and we figured out it was actually the staz on was too juicey once the pad dried out a bit or they stamped off first the ink dried and the sealer didn't blur the image.
I soak mine in bleach over night, which removes the gloss from the domino, stamp with staz-on, color and use Crystal effects to coat them. That works perfect for me...I did try spraying and everyone is right, you do have to spray lightly, if you put a heavy spray it will smear. But, I found the Crystal effects works perfect.
I had the same problems - tried everything. Then I asked my dh to spray them, and wouldn't you know, they came out perfectly! I was/am too heavy on the spray button!
I'm just trying the dominoes. Since I didn't have a clue, I sanded first, then stamped with Stazon. I colored with mu Twinkling H2Os and let dry. I used Wacky tack and microberaded over it. Since I was making a pin, it worked out great!
I have the best luck when I spray two or three *light * coats of Krylon Workable Fixative, THEN spray a couple of *light* coats of Krylon Crystal Clear. Also, I keep my heat gun handy, and if I think I may have sprayed a little heavily, I quickly "ccok" the finish on. :-D HTH!
