An altered book is where you take an actual book (usually with a nice looking hardcover) and glue pages together, cut 'pockets' in the glued pages, paint the pages, tie them together, what ever you like. They usually end up only opening up to a few pages, and follow a theme.
A friend did a really nice one about the day she spent at the beach. Found a blue hardcover book at the used book store, glued just about all the pages together, and had it open in the middle of the book. She had cut out the insides of all the glued pages on the left side ,so it was more like a box then a book. She painted it all blues and greens, glued some sand here and there, and put in some seashells, a few rocks, and a small glass vial of sand. She used the opposite page to do her journaling with. Again, it was all painted and decorated, with the journaling printed on vellum and attatched with brads.
She only did 2 pages, but you can have as many as you like. She also covered up all the words on the page with the paint, but some people incorporate the text into their design.
While I think they look really beautiful, I also think they are alot of work, and kind of useless. I would much rather do a scrapbook page, but that is just my opinion.
