Default Do most of you use a ruler when doing faux stitching?

I haven't tried this yet, and wasn't sure what most people did.

Thanks.

Great idea! I never thought about using a ruler. And I'm always disappointed with how the lines are so wobbily.

Silly me... I'm still learning tricks.

I don't. When I use my sewing machine for stitching, it always comes out slightly uneven and I like it So that's what I try to duplicate with the Faux stitching. I do use a piece of Plastic Canvas as a guide, so my holes are nice and lined up evenly. It's SO much cheaper than the Mat Pack.

I definitely use the mat pack template! I love it! Not only is it great for stitching but for lining up those holes for eyelets!!!!!! Awesome idea! I could never get eyelets in a straight row until I started using the mat pack!

I don't, in fact once I have the holes pierced, I use my white pen or marker to "connect the dots" making sure to pick up the tip between stitches. It makes it a more realistic machine stitch effect. A majority of my stampers have to feel the sample to see if it is real or not. I love the mat pack!

I have used a ruler to make the faux dash marks. BUT when I used my ruler to make the lines with my white gel pen I ended up getting link on my ruler. When I moved my ruler it made smudge marks. So as a word of caution. If you use the pen and ruler together make sure you wipe off the ruler every time.
I have now switched to the mat pack to make the holes and then I just connect the dots.

Since I don't have a mat pack I use a ruler to make the holes, but not to make the lines. I started out making pencil marks and then holes, because my ruler wouldn't stay still for hole-making, but then *duh* figured out that I can just tape the darn thing down!

I use the Mat Pack (or plastic template from the Crafter's Tool Kit -- same thing) to make the perfectly spaced holes, then connect them with a pen free-hand. I think it's more realistic this way -- machine stitches are rarely straight all the time. I usually pause just a bit at each hole, so the pen kind of highlights the hole, too -- just to make it a little more visible.

I usually just wing it. No ruler. I like the look to be more like "hand-stitched".

Default faux stitching hint

A tip using a ruler and any pen: Tape two pennies to the underneath side of the ruler. This lifts the ruler from the paper and keeps ink from being sucked under the ruler and smearing. I learned this in a drafting class. HTH

I'm going to use the ruler. My hands spontaneously spasm every now and then, I need all the help I can get.

I love the penny idea, Marciad! My drafting teacher (God rest his soul) never taught us that. You could probably mini glue dot 'em in too.

Well that's pretty smart. I love simple solutions like this!

I have the Fiber Friend and Eyelet Friend rulers from Timeless Touches -- they are clear rulers with holes evenly spaced (different spacings on the two sides). I love using those to make my holes (helps will nicely positioned corner eyelets too). But I draw my lines freehand...sometimes they are wobbly, but I don't stitch straight IRL, so why should my faux be perfect ~LOL

Default penny clarification

When I posted about the pennies, I taped one near one end of the ruler, one near the other. Not one on top of the other Thought my earlier post might not be quite clear. Glad to hear that it is helpful. Happy creating.
