How to work with Wire ?
Hi, as a newbie, I'm hoping someone can help !
I've got some small metal charms and want to put them onto a card - I've glued some on but of course they have small hoops/links at the top so would be better to be wired on, but how do you do that - how do you hide the wire ? Also, I've seen a card with Xmas baubles and the wire is a decoration (with small beads along it) along the top, so that the baubles hang off the wire. But again, how would you attach a length of wire to the card ? Thanks .. in advance ! |
On the charms - you can attach them with a brad and make that feature on the card, or you can use twine or ribbon. I think it's hard to conceal whatever you use, better to make a feature of it. With ribbon you might need an extra jump ring (as you'd use in jewellery making) to let the charm lie flat. I see a lot of people adding charm in with their bows and I think it looks great - but I'm not much of a ribbon person on my own cards :D. If I don't want to have to use anything like that I'll take a pliers and break the loop off, and just use glue.
Fixing wire to a card is easy if it's just a length of wire; use a fine needle or pin to poke a hole through the card, thread the wire through and fix it at the back with tape. Wire shapes without an end are harder, because you can't do this. A strong adhesive usually works, or else I'll actually sew them on with a couple of stitches in clear nylon thread if I can do this where it won't be seen. |
you could try ataching them with jump rings to ribbon, baker's twine etc. i personally find wire easier to work with if it's not attached to the card so thread it thru and then coil the ends so it can't fall out.

That's great advice - thanks both of you so much for your thoughts/advice/opinions ! I'm going to try using some of the ideas soon. Thank you again !

If I have a wire that I want to expo both ends rather than poke them through to the back, I make my wire the length I want, add beads etc., loop it where needed and coil the ends. Then to attach it, I poke two very small holes on either side of the wire and thread a small length of wire through them and around the wire and twist on the back to secure. I do this wherever needed in places it won't show much, but it can also be used to hang on a charm as well as secure the wire itself. Sometimes I use an embellishment over the wire(s) to secure and let the ends of the wire(s) go free with or without beads, loops, coils, etc. The attached picture show the later. Sorry, didn't have time to scan the others today.
