I made a black and white copy of my mother's 1942 school photo and then colored it with SU pastels using the applicators, although sometimes I just use a Q-Tip. It came out beautifully! I used Blush Blossom for skin, added a tiny touch of pretty in pink for cheek color, and carefully picked up some real red on my blender pen tip and scribbled with it on a scrap first to make sure it was "just so" to get a touch of color on her lips that matched the time period.
I also did one of a blond girl in her class who had blue eyes, and it came out really pretty with the pastels, too. You don't have to do much shading, because the shadows in the photo do it for you. I was making a small memory book for my aunt and she really loved it.
I have just started trying it with the Copic markers, and they work well, too. But my SU pastels were a lot less expensive and I have more colors!
