Smile Coloring in the Cuttlebug Embossed backgrounds

I have seen several cards where people 'colored in' the embossed areas on backgrounds. Most times, there is a distressed look to it. How is that done? Can anyone explain this to me. I would really appreciate it.

I just drag what ever color of ink pad I want to use across my embossed image.
