How about: Cut an octagonal shape from cardstock to whatever size you want the base of your box. Clip a 'v' shape at each junction to form 'tabs'. This would act as the bottom of the box and begin the structure.
Cut a piece of cardstock to fit around all of the tabs (enclosing them if you will) and as long as you want the box to be 'tall'. This would be the 'walls' of your box.
Score and fold the pieces of the 'walls' (to correspond to the tabs) and glue the tabs to one end of this. This would be the bottom of the box.
This should make your box in a 'pencil' or 'crayon' shape.
For the lid: Cut a circle of the diameter you need to fit the top of your octagonal box. Cut a slit in the circle, up to the center of the circle. Fold the slit over onto itself to form a 'cone' shape.
Cut the bottom of the cone into eight tabs to match the octagonal sides of the box, score and fold down to sit on top of the box.
You could even put a ribbon trip around the edge of the lid tabs to give them added strength.
You might need to make a mockup, first, from light weight card. Then, use heavier weight card to make the real thing so that it is sturdy enough to stand and withold the pencils or whatever.
Anyway, this is just an idea and I'm not even sure if it would work. I'll have to give it a try, myself.
Hope it does work for you or that you find a template or instructions that do.
