help with balloon background, please

I have seen some of the wonderful cards done with the balloon background. I thought i had it figured out, then a couple of cards pop up using it with rice or Cheerios? Could someone please explain this technique to me?

Thanks a bunch,

Angel

Put the rice,cheerios,macorini-what ever you want into the balloon.Tie it and use it like a stamp.Depending on what you put into your balloon will depend on the effect you get.

Thank you for the quick response. I always thought that the balloon technique included blowing the balloon up and using it that way as a stamp. As you can guess, doing it this way would not give any different effect if it included the food.

Thanks again

Angel

I haven't heard of this background, I would like to try it. does the image of the food go thur the balloon? and I guess you ink up the balloon like a stamp but I think you would have to be real careful wouldn't you if you use like cheerios?

This was a VSN challenge :)

Ooh, I've done this! Rice works, macaroni works, I would think Cheerios would ge crushed, though. Also worked really well with pony beads. I would bet some of the bigger dried beans would look good.

Ooh, how about paperclips?

There were some in the gallery over the weekend that were really cool! Some one used frozen peas and it looked really neat. I'll bet uncooked beans would work good too and you wouldn't have to worry about those getting mushy!! :)

I haven't tried the paperclips, just thought it was a good idea.

It's best to use a thick balloon, one that won't break easily from pressure from whatever textured item you are using. It helps to have a funnel to fill your balloon. I've found it works best if you fill the balloon until you have about a 2-inch mound of texture, then tie the balloon tightly against the mound. Then you ink the balloon like a stamp. The texture from whatever material you used will transfer to your cardstock, yes. If you use delicate materials like cheerios, you will want to be more careful than with something like eyelets or washers. Hope this helps! :-)

Diane,

One of the gals who did a card (a winning card, BTW) for VSN used paperclips and all sorts of other goodies from around her house that she found. They really do make the texture interesting!

I'll have to try this as soon as I can get to the store and get some balloons or will a condom work? LOL! Just kidding!
Have a great day!

Diane, I'm not sure about a condom -- it probably would if chemical-free, though it might be too delicate. ANYWAY, instead of a balloon, you can use a lunch bag or some saran wrap -- several did for VSN, and it worked fine.

I just checked out the gallery for the balloon technique and the cards are gorgeous. I might just have to make one and demo it at my stamp club meeting next month.:D
