are gamsol and terpenoid the same?
 

I am trying to find some gamsol and cannot... I have been to Hobby Lobby and M's but have found only terpenoid.

What can I use to "move" the colored pencils???

Gamsol is only a brand name -- just look for "odorless mineral spirits" on the label! :) I don't think turpenoid is the same thing, but I'm not a painter so I'm not sure.

I use Mona Lisa Odorless Paint Thinner... Mona Lisa is the brand name, and is carried by Michael's Village Crafts. On the back of the container it should say "100% odorless mineral spirits"... the magic for disolving the colors in PrismaColor professional quality soft lead pencils. Unfortunately, this technique does not work well (at all?) with watercolor or regular color pencils.

I have tried odorless terpenoid (more expensive) and personally find it does not break down the colors nearly as well.

Check for this product in the area of Michaels where they sell the tube oil paints and other fine art products.

I just use regular baby oil to blend my prismacolor pencils.

Wow! What a far cheaper way to go! Definately going to have to try this one.

It works for blending, however, you are left with a film on the reverse of the paper, even using 140 lb., weight sometimes. So you'd need to mat the artwork onto a base. Gamsol is not carried by Joanns, Michaels, or Hobby Lobby. You need to go art supply stores. I use turponoid as suggested by House Mouse Designs artist Kim Curry. As with Gamsol, stumps are used. No I don't think they are the same.......here is a link to another thread about Exposure limits that you may find interesting. I'm not sure if there is an Exposure limit difference between Gamsol and the Mona Lisa. I've used both and don't really seem a whole lot of difference in their ability to do the job. I haven't used baby oil nor terp.

Gamsol and Mona Lisa are the same thing, Gamsol is just a trade name,its made by the comapny Gamblin. They are both odorless mineral spirits.

I looked up turpenoid and it says its an odorless Turpentine, hence the name. I have used it and I prefer Mona Lisa to it. I also use stumps to blend.

Just look for oderoless mineral spirits like ROW4D said and you should be fine.

I use baby oil and it works ok (I haven't made it to the store yet to get mineral spirits) but you have to use white because the other colors will show the oil.

I got some gamsol at an art supply store in town :)
I have used baby oil, alchohol and o.m.s. and they all have a little different look. When doing it with my kids they use baby oil and have a great time!

I asked my fellow teacher Wendy( our art teacher) about gamsol. She looked it up and indeed it is a brand name for turpenoid sp? (it is a turpentione based product). She gave me some turpenoid and it worked just fine. I was in an art medium store and asked the same question. The owner told me that they are basically the same but Gamsol is actually better for the environment.
