Fruit Cans

Ok, I have been searching about the Del Monte fruit pop-top cans, but I am having trouble with exactly how to remove the bottom. I read that you should use something like a Pampered Chef can opener to "unseal rather than cut" the bottom. How do you do that??? I'm struggling here and was SO looking forward to doing this.

Thanks,
Mandy

Can Opener

To open them you need a "Safety Can Opener". I found mine at a grocery store. I bought a manual one. I have told my daughter to look for an automatic. The nice thing about them is they make the removal of the lid easy and smooth so you can't accidentally cut yourself. Then you attach them with a glue gun, or E6000 glue, etc.

I will look on the Internet to see if I can find one for you to look at.

It looks like they range from $10 to $20. My manual cost around $10 and works fine.

I bought a safety can opener at Wal Mart for around $3.50, I think. I keep it with my crafts - not for general kitchen use.

It's hard to explain if you haven't seen it - but this can opener takes off the lid and the side of the lid as one piece - oh - it is recommended that you remove the bottom of the can.

Fill the can, then use Crystal Effects or E6000 glue to glue the bottom back on.

I've done this and love giving these as a fun gift.

Just make sure that if you're filling your can with edible items that will not be inside any kind of sealed bag, use non-toxic glue!

fruit cans

Be careful what glue you use, I used E6000 and it made all the candy inside taste like the glue!

Here's one example of the type of can opener you need. I have this model and purchased it at Kohl's.

I just made some of these fruit cups and used "The Ultimate Glue" from Crafter's Pick. It did not leave any odor and the people I gave them to said the candy inside was fine (I put m & ms in a small plastic bag to avoid any possibility of glue getting on them). I was a little concerned the glue would not hold, but several people opened the can from the bottom (instead of using the pop top) and they had to work to break the glue seal. I did put a rubberband tightly around each can while the glue was drying to make sure the bottoms would stay in place.

Crafter's Pick is listed on several websites, but I purchased mine from Michael's for a reasonable price.

I found mine can opener at a Dollar Store completely on accident. I needed a new one and picked one out for ...yep $1!!! I didn't realize until I got home that it was the safety version! Lucky me.

why can't the candy be in a bag? just wondering! thanks

This sounds so fun! Do you open the bottom of the can, use the contents as normal, clean the can, fill it, then glue the bottom back, stamp the outside and give it as a gift? How clever!!

I think you misunderstood! :) I was saying that if you plan on leaving the items loose in the can, to use a nontoxic glue so as not to contaminate the food and make it unsafe to eat. If they are sealed inside some kind of bag or wrapper, you should be fine because it will be protected from the adhesive. E-6000 and Krazy Glue are not a good idea if the treats won't be wrapped somehow!

I got mine at Bed Bath & Beyond. By OXO. If you type in your search engine smooth cut can openers it will bring up a few sources that you can find these can openers. The one I bought is a hand held one but I think Hamilton Beach has an electric one. The key words here are smooth cut can openers. Hope this helps.

And this works on all size cans even coffee cans, they have the pull shiny lids, just take off the bottom and leave the pull lid attached . Place gift inside after you have decorated the can and you have created a great gift can!

Soooo, who's eatin' all the contents of these cans? My kids got sick of me shoving canned fruit at 'em so I could have the cans . . . ;) LOL!

ILLINI! Stamper 11-27-2005 04:00 AM

I had trouble finding cans with a definite "edge." Most cans now have a rounded bottom (lip) and my OXO safety can opener wouldn't open these.

I've had great luck finding cans by buying the "store" brand, instead of the famous brands--for some reason the store brands, i.e. Western Family (as opposed to Del Monte), do not have those rounded bottom lips! :D

I'm sure the store employees consider me "wacked", but I actually go down the aisles of the store with my hand on top of the cans to find the pop tops, and then when I do, I pull it off the shelf to check out the bottom. It's not true in every case, but more frequently than not.
