Is it o.k. to use any Mineral Spirits in place of Gamsol when doing the blending of Prismacolor pencils on a project. I looked at Hobby Lobby & JoAnns and couldn't find Gamsol so I ended up at Lowes to buy another brand of Mineral Spirits. Has anyone tried anything other than Gamsol with good results?
Thanks a Bunch!!
The mineral spirits available at home improvement stores is not artist grade. The artist grade brands (such as Gamsol or Mona Lisa) found in hobby and/or art stores contain a lower concentration of the noxious chemicals.
I don't know if the results are any different, but I wouldn't recommend using the stuff from Lowe's because of the chemicals.
Two artist grade brands, besides Gamsol, are Mona Lisa (which is made by Hampton Arts) and Winsor & Newton.

Yes, you can. Mine is not Gamsol or Mona Lisa, and it works just fine. It has a very low odor, too.
ALL mineral spirits give off fumes, and fumes can be harmful if proper precautions are not taken (good ventialtion). Just because you can't smell it doesn't mean it won't hurt you, so please remember to use ANY mineral spirit - odorless or not - near an open window or fan.
I use baby oil to blend with my Prismacolor pencils. It's cheap enough and available. I tried OMS but I am really sensitive to odors and it bothered me.
