Faux tearing is where you take a torn piece of paper and use it to mask off an area, and then sponge a border on the uncovered area. This will give you the look of having an additional layer of torn paper on your card without the bulk of having an actual layer.
You can also stamp the design on a piece of paper./ Tear around it and use this as a mask, sponge around the masked off piece. So it looks like the stamped image is in front of the sponged area.
The one I saw was done with a ruler. I found the example when I looked at directions for keeping ink from going under a ruler. You attach a coin(s) to the ruler. This is a trick learned by draftsmen. I just assumed you drew lines around a layer, but it looked like there might be some tips for doing it well. Thanks for the faux tearing technique info.
