I just bought a new and stronger (brighter) embossing table, but I still can't see through the dark cardstock. I've tried working in a pitch dark room with only the embossing table light on, too. Am I missing out on some trick for dry embossing when you can't see through the paper?
Place the brass template on a hard table (your light table will work). Gently "scribble" across the template with the side of the ball on your stylus. The image will appear as an indentation. Now go over the image as you would with the end of the stylus.
I have heard that an empressor stylus works the same way without a light table.
I dont think you can emboss on dark...I tried...even holding it up to a window didnt help...I just kind of felt through the paper to see where to put the stylus...I wont be doing that again!!! :shock:
If there is a way, I'd be curious to know...the only thing I can suggest, is if you have a Sizzix machine (or if you dont, get one quick!! ) get their embossing folders...they work like a charm! easy, quick and no cramped fingers...

As for the Sizzix ... I have one, but can you only use the Sizzix embossing templates (in the plastic sleeves) to emboss on a Sizzix? What can I do with my dozens and dozens of brass templates, then? (Besides using them on just white or pale colored CS? :lol:
ok...here goes...you CAN use your brass templates with the sizzix and here is how! Just keep in mind that your image will be framed with the impression left from the outside edges of the template itself...make sense?
First...cut an old (spongy/foamy, not the thin hard kind) mouse pad to the size of the converter...place your brass template on the cutting board, then your paper, then your mouse pad and then the converter...press down (at least twice to make a good impression) and voila an embossed image...with a frame around it!

You can dry emboss with a light table on dark cardstock if it has a white core (such as CTMH cardstock) or the color is only printed on one side of the cardstock(not sure of the manufacturer, but you can find this in local stamp/scrap stores).
Try this -it works great for me
Securely tape a piece of cardstock velum onto your template and emboss it as you would paper.
Insert your dark cardstock between the velum and the template(velum on top and template underneath).
Emboss the cardstock using the embossing on the velum as a guide.

Securely tape a piece of cardstock vellum to your brass template.
Emboss the vellum as you normally would.
Insert your cardstock between the vellum and the template(vellum on top, template underneath)
Emboss over the vellum image- this will emboss your cardstock.
You never need a light!
I have had success with *some* dark cs by merely turning the lights off in the room I am working in! When you take away the surrounding light, you can see light through the dark cs. One of the previous posts mentioned a white/light core to the paper. Perhaps that is why this technique works better on some dark cs than others.
so rubbing over the image with the stylus - this was talked about at regionals, and i intend to try it. but with the SU! templates, how do you isolate the image that you want with this technique, given that there are multiple images on each template?

I too, am having trouble with dry empossing on dark cardstock. Even with the lamp you cannot see the template at all. Have tried rubbing over the paper with the stylus but does not help.
I use the Empressor - no light table needed. I just sort of feel around with the stylus and when I find the indentations I run it around the edge! Don't know how I could emboss SU cardstock otherwise, it is so thick and heavy! But that is why I like it! I like the vellum idea, too, might have to try that!
How do you dry emboss on really dark or heavy CS?
