Embossing Folder with Spellbinder's Edge
 

I would like to know the technique for using an EF on a card, and then having a cut and embossed edge with Spellbinders, such as the card shown in the GLENDA BROOKS gallery FOR June 1, 2013. The Spellbinder edges are nice and crisp, showing none of the dotted pattern. Would be great to have a tutorial on it!

This is more difficult to explain than to do!

Cut your shape as usual.

Leave the paper in the die.

Lay the embossing folder flat with the inside up.

Place the paper and die on the indented side of the embossing folder with the cutting edge of the die facing up.

Place the tan embossing mat on top.

Leaving the folder open run it through your machine.

Sandwich for Cuttlebug is A plate, B plate, open Cuttlebug folder, die and paper, tan mat, shim if necessary, B plate.

As long as you don't have the cutting edge of the die facing your folder you won't do any damage.

I have tried this technique in my bigshot, but I found the sandwich with no tabs was a bit too thick and I've actually squished the adhesive from between the platform and the vinyl layer over it. I think it would work better with a mask/stencil than the folders in the bs.

Interesting. I've never actually seen this before. Some people are sooo clever. Wish I was one of them!

This technique sounds great, but I have a bigshot, too. Has anyone done this successfully with a bigshot? What was your sandwich?

Sorry, I don't have a Big Shot..I used my Cuttlebug and it worked fine.

Can you please tell me what EF stands for? These cards are absolutely beautiful and would like to try it but not sure what the EF means. Thanks

Oh Of course, I must have been having one of those moments, thanks for your responses.

I just tried this with my Big Kick - the Big Shot should work the same:

Multi Purpose platform; no tabs
Clear cutting plate
Embossing folder, opened
Die cut inside of die; cutting side up
Spellbinders Tan embossing mat
Clear Cutting Plate

When I rolled it thru, it almost felt like there wouldn't be enough pressure to emboss, but it turned out great.

Thanks so much! I've printed out the sandwich you listed above (no way will I manage to just remember all that ;) ). I am new to the Big Shot and had no idea how to convert the other sandwiches to work for me. I appreciate the help.

No problem! Remember, though - the pressure on the machines can vary, and I've noticed that the thickness of the embossing folders can vary as well, so you might need to add a shim here or there, and if you start cranking things thru and it feels too tight, don't force it!

That's great! I hadn't seen it done on a card, but I've often wondered if it were possible.

I have to try this now. I wondered how you did it without cutting your ef.

Ohh, I can't WAIT to try this. I thought it would be super-complicated and I am so happy that it isn't as I struggle with new techniques. What a clever person to think up this idea! Thanks for the sandwiches for the BS and the CB :)

Oh....That sounds like a fun technique. It's one of those things that helps me use the tools I already have. :)

Can someone post a card showing this idea. I checked the gallery for Glenda Brooks and the only card I find for June 1 is a floral tag. It has a beautiful edge on it but no embossing. I am curious to see what this looks like.

If you look at the bottom of the page where you saw the tag for Glenda Brooks...there is another card showing the edge WITH the dotted swiss embossing also on the card. hope this helps or I could email you a link to the page?
