Default Paper Ornament

I thought I would share the directions for this paper ornament. It was on the Carol Duvall Show back in the early 90's, and the guest was Mary O'Neil. She had originally coved the cardstock with stamped velvet, but with all the beautiful papers and embellies we have now, you can go hog wild! Please excuse the quality of the photo and my lame atempt to explain the directions!

Materials:
6" square of patterned paper (It should not be too thick nor too thin as you will be making a lot of folds.)
bone folder
double sided adhesive tape
regular tape
hot glue or tacy glue
ribbon or thread for hanging
ribbon bow
paper piercer
punch of choice for dangle (Use something can can be sandwiched together.)

Start with your 6" square of patterned paper.
1. Fold square in half vertically, then horzontally. Crease well and unfold.
2. Fold square diagonally twice to form an X. Crease well and unfold.
3.Working from one corner at a time, fold the length of each adjacent side edges to the center diagonal fold mark (as if you were making a paper airplane.) Crease well and unfold, repeating in each of the next 3 corners.

Now here comes the tricky part! To fold the ornament, turn it so one corner is pointing toward you. Pinch in the left and right corners, scrunching the outside edges of the square upward so the points form a four point star. Inside the star, the score lines will form an octagon shape. Now reach into the star shape and push down on the center of the octagon shape with your finger, popping it outward and bringing the sides of the star-shape together at one point on the top. Open the card stock back up.

Take two punched shapes and sandwich a thread (about 6" long and knoted at one end) between the two, so the punch is at the end (knotted) of the thread.

Make a hole in the exact center of the square with your paper piercer.

Run the thread up into the hole of the square, adjusting the length to your liking. Tape the end securely to the inside of the ornament.

Make a hanging loop of thread and knot several times to form a large enough knot that it won't pull out of the top of the ornament.

Working around the star shape, run adhesive close the the folded edges and start closing up the ornamet, piching the inside edges firmly together as you go, being sure the bottom portion os pushed outward! Put the hanging cord into the ornament before you close up the last 2 points of the star shape, catching the knot inside. I like to glue the very last segment together, as you can't reach in and press the taped edges together as you are closing it! Hot glue works great because it sets up very quickly.

When glue is dry, glue a pretty bow to the top and embelish bow with another punch, a pretty button, or whatever suits your fancy!

This really is a lot easier than it sounds once you get the fold figured out. You can make it larger, but I like the 6" size for practicality. You can also use a tassle instead of punched shape, or not have any dangle! These really turn out pretty and are very inexpensive to make. If you have any questions, feel free to PM me.

This looks really neat, thanks for putting it up. I'm going to copy it down and give it a try.

I remember this ornament well. I actually ordered the velvet and had my stampin group make them. They sure loved the outcome and some of them still have them on their Christmas trees. The scoring (as usual) was the hardest part for them!!!! They really do make a nice ornament...never thought of just doing designer paper with them!!! Might have to try it! Thanks for helping me remember and for the tip!

I have one of those on my tree every year. A dear friend, who has since passed, made it for me by recycling a foiled Christmas card. It must be smaller than the one you show, but I love it. I've always wondered how to make it. I'm going to try it this year.

Thank-you!
