Default Stamping on tile - Staz-on, Krylon or heating, OH my....

Ok so I went a bought some 1x1 inch tiles at Home Depot (36 all hooked together for $2.25 - can't beat that) so I decided to try out the stamping on tile in *hopes* of maybe making some cute little magnets for gifts and such...

So I get out my black Staz-on pad and my Tags and more set and stamp - a snowman on one and flowers on the other.

Then I took them outside and sprayed them with bit of Krylon spray...

here is where it turned bad...

the ink ran - not so bad on the snowman he just has a faint purpleish shadow around the edges of the ink but the flower one forget it...

Did I spray to hard or should I expect some "shadowing"...or was it my tiles - they weren't shiney tiles but they do have a smooth surface?

I remember someone mentioned about "baking" thier tiles to heat-set the ink but I can't find that post again where they mentioned how long they put it in for and at what temp.

I do want to do something to make sure that the image will stay since you can readily remove the "permanent" Staz-on ink with certain chemicals (like fingernail polish remover)

Thanks all

Jenni,

Whenever I use Staz-On I use the type of sealer that is water-based. Regular sealer will cause it to run unless you use it VERY light handed. I am in Germany now and had to give my sealer away and can't think of the name right now, but I purchased it at Wal-mart in the paint section. It said water based on the front of the spray can. It isn't cheap though, I think I paid about $7 for one can but it works better with the Staz-On (for heavy-handed me) than the regular sealers. HTH!

Beate bakes hers. When I saw her post with instructions, I printed it out. If you go to the technique forum, you will find a few posts about tiles

This is something I'm interested in too. Just haven't gotten there yet.

This has nothing to do with sealer but Melissa, we were stationed in Wiesbaden as well!! We came back to the states in 1999. I wish I had known about SU back then-what fun I would have had, there was not much in the way of inexpensive crafts "on the economy". Have fun for us over there!

I am also working on the 2x2 tiles. before I stamped on them I painted them with Gesso (that is what my upline told me she did. So that is what I did. Right now I am in the process of going over the edges with the Zig painty pen. Then I will seal them and attach to magnet clips that I got at Staples. I hope to get them done today as I have a package or two or three to mail out.

I have stamped many of the 2x2 tiles from Home Depot for magnets. I use Staz-On and color in with Sharpies. That's it. I never sealed them and have had no problems. Maybe if you use them as coasters they need to be sealed? But as far as magnets, mine are just fine.

I am so glad to find this discussion. I have just ventured out into stamping on times and my main question is: what sets are you having the best luck with? I have treid 2x2 and n o w want to get to the 1x1. Can you use ane embelishments on tile?

Here's my two cents......I had my girls make coasters last year for Xmas using the tumbled marble tiles. I rinsed mine tiles off first (they had a powdery residue on them) and then baked them in the oven on a low heat, like 200 degrees, for several hours. I didn't seal mine because I wanted them to absorb the water that "sweats" off of drinking glasses. I think that a sealant would interfere with the natural stone quality to absorb moisture.

If anyone has had a different experience regarding the sealing, I'd love to hear more about it.

HTH

Default Tiles

There are many files that I have copied from Stampin discuss forum from our wonderful demontrators that explain tiles. Here is the general break down of all these files in a nice neat outline. I made some of these last night and they are great. The Kyrlon Fixative will allow the tile to not sweat moisture.

1. Purchase marble tumbled tiles from Home Depot. Nine in a box...usually around $6
2. Ingredients:
Black Stazon
Kyrlon Fixative Spray (craft stores)
Stamp set of choice: (like Sun Ripened II also the new Ageless Adornment )
Background set: (example: french script)
Stampin Pastels (work great!)
Sand Paper
Cookie Sheet
3. Wash and Dry tile
4. Lightly sand tile and then wipe off with dish towel
5. With stamp of choice stamp on tile with black stazon
6. Let dry (this is the hardest part) Just a few minutes of waiting
7. While waiting, us same stamp and stamp on scrap paper, then cut image out
This can be used to mask image on tile so you can use the background stamp.
8. You can increase dry time by using the heat gun
9. Once image has dried, mask with scrap image, and stamp background stamp with
stazon color of choice (some say you can use classic pads as well).
10. Let dry
11. Color in image with stampin pastels
12. Place tile on cookie sheet in 350 degree oven for 15 minutes. This will set the tiles.
Some use the heat gun to dry, that's fine. But if you have several you are doing at a time
then I like to use the oven.
13. Once set, then you can lightly spray the fixative on the tiles.

Done....they look great. For coaster stick 4 little felt dots on bottom. For display use a small
plate stand.

Default Well

Having made close to 200 tiles to date ~ yes, I like making tiles and that number actually now scares me that it's that high ~ I can tell you 1. I've never baked them and 2. I would never use Krylon brand. I just don't like their products and they are not geared toward crafting like other sprays are. The brand I buy is in the craft section and the can is white with blue around the top and the manufacturer is a woman's name. If my daughter was home I'd call her and ask the name, but alas, she is not. It comes in Matte, Glossy, and Extra Thick Gloss. I buy the first two depending on the look I am going for.

I buy the tiles in that are unfinished and come 9 to a box ~ I want to say they are 3.5 x 3.5 but I'm at work and can't measure them. The funniest part is I have been known to sit on the floor of Home Depot for an hour picking out the perfect tiles and compiling my own boxes. Never has anyone done anything other than ask if they could help me find the good one. Because the tiles are unsealed, they are ready straight out of the box. I dust them off with my hand or a dry cloth.

I stamp with StazOn in any of the four colors I have. On the butterflies I did, I stamped the butterfly, masked off, then stamped French Script in the background. I colored the butterflies with colored pencil ~ not SU pencils because I have a better set that is softer and defines better because I wanted much more detailed coloring and shading. After coloring I sprayed them with the sealer 3 times. The trick to spraying is to hold the can high on the first round. Don't get too close. We learned quickly that's why StazOn will run. If you get the fixative/acrylic sealer too close it will run everywhere. My SIL did a beautiful happy birthday cow from Many Moos and got just a touch too close (we were spraying in the dark at night outside) and it ran everywhere. So we took a couple of tiles and did some tests and found that they only reason StazOn ever runs is if you get too close on the first pass through. Subsequent pass throughs won't harm the StazOn.

The butterflies are still on my coffee table, had everything from wine to beer to milk to soda spilled on them and have not faded. My dad's set of coasters made from Classic Convertables have held up just as well.

I can't say don't bake the tiles, but I can say using the right acrylic makes all the difference in the world.

Hi, here are my most recent experiences with tiles in a stream-of-consciousness list: : )

1 I've baked some and not baked others, I have not noticed a difference.

2 for magnets I've used staz on and my Stampin' Write markers and I heated with my heat gun to keep the marker from bleeding and those particular magnets are my favorite so far because I was able to choose from 48 colors!

3 For coasters, I've preferred staz on and Sharpies and I haven't sealed or baked or anything. One tiny spot has run because it was in a "vein" of the natural stone tile and I guess it's a more porous spot, but the run is so faint you can't see it. For my customers, I baked and sealed with matte sealer just to be safe.

4 We also used pastels/chalks and the Pure Color pencils for coloring in.

5 I've also used Fabrico markers with success and I baked those.

6 My FIL sanded my tiles that were particulary unsmooth and that works well. He used a belt sander. The tiles that come in a box are good because you can go throught the box and only buy the smoothest tiles, but with the mosaic tiles you take what you can get. Sanding them helps a lot!

Hope that helps!

I believe the sealer Kymbers_Stampin was talking about is Plaid brand Patricia Nimocks clear acrylic sealer. I happen to have it already!

Default Yeah!

That's it!! I did try baking tiles last night with disasterous results. It faded the inks. I'll stick to my Patricia Nimocks.
