Trace the frame onto patterned paper with a pencil. I found that if you trace it on the right side of the paper (you'll find that many tutorials will tell you to trace on the wrong side of the paper), you will get the right size template for the front of the frame in case there are any imperfections. Trace the cut out where the photo will be placed as well. Cut out your template. When you are ready to cut into the middle part of the frame where you would insert the picture, create an X in the middle from one corner to the other. Using a sharp craft's knife/blade carefully trace the X. This way you will get 4 triangular pieces that you can cut out with scissors to cut out small fine details or a sharp craft knife.
I use Mod Podge to adhere my patterned paper, but you need to be careful if you use this product. Start from the top and work your way down. If you get air bubbles, you can use your bone folder or a used credit card to smooth down the air bubble. Let dry (it dries pretty quickly). Once dry, smooth out the edges of the frame by using a sand block. Then I use another swipe of Mod Podge to protect the patterned paper on the frame. Now you are ready to decorate the front of the frame to your heart's desire.
If you do not want to use Mod Podge, I am sure you can double stick tape to adhere the patterned paper onto your frame since the stickiness will become permanent in time. I use it all of the time for all of my projects and I haven't had any paper come off of the card, etc...
But my recommendation is to use Mod Podge. Good luck with your project!!!
Hope this helps...
