Default How do I make a "burst through" in card stock?

I am making a Valentine and want the sentiment to look like it is bursting through the paper. I have searched all over the place and cannot find a good tutorial on how to do this. In the attached example, i want the sentiment to be on the green part. I cut a slit in the paper but can't figure out a way to roll the cut up flaps back to look right.

has anyone done this?

Hey — I've done something similar on the edges of paper. Wonder if this would work: I wet the paper so it would be softer and more pliable, then curled it back on a pencil to get the shape, then let it dry. You could also try distressing or sanding the edges before wetting it, so you get some interesting textures.

You need to cut (or tear) in several directions and then roll back each portion. I happened to put the image in the "hole" rather than the sentiment on the attached one but it's the same principle on a bigger scale.

Make a hole or cut a cross slit in the centre of the area you want to peel away. Then tear from that hole/slit out to the edge of the area to make several "flaps". Use something like a thin paintbrush handle or bamboo skewer to help you roll those flaps down so they curl back towards the card.

HTH!

Thanks! I think the mistake I was making was cutting with scissors and not tearing the flaps. Will try to roll it. Such a cute monster card! Will post whatever I end up doing.

many thanks for all your help!
It is coming along and I changed my mine a little bit and put the main character in the middle.
Cutting a slit and ripping outward worked really well. Now i just need to roll the edges tighter and figure out how to stick it all on.

(the inside will be Hope Your Valentine's Day is a SMASH)

But don't make me angry, you wouldn't like me when I'm angry

Cute idea, perfect with the "burst through"!
