Hey everyone! I am trying to make the cute baby onesies that I see on this site for a party I am having this saturday... but I can't find how to make them. I read something about using craft inks instead of classic... but thats all I found. Can anyone help me? I will be giving them away as a gift to customers - so I hate to do it wrong then have bad things happen when they go to wash them for the first time!!!!!!!!!
Hi Kristina,
I've made some baby onesies and they do make a great gift. You must use craft ink. If you stamp your image and want to make it darker, you can use your stampamajig to perfectly line up your stamp and stamp over it again with the same ink.
Lastly, you must use your heat tool for a minute or two to set the ink. That's it!
Beleive it or not, the Stazon washes out. I tested three inks in different colors on fabric recently, Stazon, Classic ink from SU and SU Craft Ink that was heat set. Only the Craft ink that was heat set lasted. The others faded and washed out.
Another thing to remember is you have to pre wash your items - very very important - and don't use fabric softener. This will help with the fading when washing tremendously. I have several shirts that I stamped years ago - and they still look fabulous - if you take these steps it will help for sure.
Another way to get darker images when you do stamp onto fabric is to "prime" your stamp. To do this you simply ink it up and stamp it onto scrap paper, then ink it again and THEN stamp onto your fabric. I had found that when stamping on fabric my first image was always lighter then the second so i tried this and it works like a charm - weird but it works!

on like page 3/4 there is a thread entitled fabric stamping guide. has lots of info for stamping with paints, using markers, or using the craft inks!
I was looking for this info myself when I saw your post.

You can use your heat gun or your iron. For small items I just go over it with my heat gun, works like a charm, if I stamp a lot, depending on the fabric, I will iron it. For ironing I lay a plain sheet of printer paper over the stamped areas and then iron over that with no steam

Although this shirt was stamped with fabric paint, the same 'rules' apply when stamping with ink. However, you MUST use a permanent ink...one that is heat set (I always use either Clearsnap Ancient Page or ColorBox Crafters).
If you want to color the image, use a Textile Marker (EK Sucess, Pebeo, etc. ).
Do not remove the freezer paper until after you have heat set the ink and the markers. If you use an iron, heat it to the temperature suitable for the fabric; if you use a heat gun, heat it long enough so that the wrong side of the fabric feels slightly warm.
Wait at least one week before laundering stamped fabric...takes that long for paint, ink and/or markers to cure.
okay but heres the thing- I followed all these directions and tips EXACTLY and it still faded so much after the first wash, you cant barely see it... help!

When you say 'craft ink', which brand of what type of ink are you using? A pigment ink is not permanent...no way, no how! But an ink that says it's permanent on fabric AFTER heat setting will be permament on fabric if heat set. I use Clearsnap Crafters and Clearsnap Ancient Page for fabric stamping.
Only other thing...was the fabric (clothing or yardage) prepped prior to stamping? All fabric (including clothing) must be washed and dried without any type of fabric softener in either the washing machine (either detergent or liquid softener) or dryer prior to applying ink, paint, glue, marker or a fusible. Fabric that will not be laundered (i.e., holiday decorations, etc.) do not require prepping.

I did wash and dry before... but I used SU craft inks.. thats what I thought everyone meant!!! oh no... so that was wrong?

I've never used SU Craft Ink...but it should be fine. Check the label on the pad...if it says, 'suitable for fabric that will be laundered,' then it's Ok.
I'm stumped...haven't the faintest why the ink washed out! Have you contacted SU? They may have a solution.
