Well you can get those composition books (the black and white ones from school days) usually for sale. I found them 3 for a dollar at the grocery store of all places. My fav is to use my rubicoil machine to make my own journals... You can use most notebooks that are premade and just take off the cover by uncoiling and punch the holes to match in your choice of cardstock, then re-coil the notebook. If you just cover the notebook, like with the comp books, I like to use spray adhesive on the cs and then adhere... after I have measured of course. Well these are just a few ideas. I personally love making journals above all else. Very cool gifts for all ages, boy or girl. For young ones, I make a matching crayon pen instead of a regular pen.
HTH
*hugs*

I have a couple in my gallery that I made for my sis and SS. I've just used Scotch double-sided tape to adhere the cardstock to the front and back. Then I always cover the inside of the covers also. I used some velveteen strip to cover the spine of the journals. I love making these.
