Default Double eyelet technique revisited

Today I went to Hobby Lobby, AC Moore, and Michaels. No jumbo eyelets to be found, so I got extra large. I had my paper bag book folded and holes punched. The extra large eyelets do not work or at least mine didn't. It looks pretty sad. Is SU the only place to get jumbo eyelets? Has anyone else tried this with another kind? If yours turned out will you please share how you did it? Thanks.

I've always been intrigued by this idea so I just had a go with We R Memory Keepers brand Extra Large eyelets and a Crop-a-dile. The result was OK although maybe more of the second one showed on the back than is absolutely ideal. I found I had to wiggle quite a bit to get the second eyelet properly seated in the first one and then squeezing really gently with the CAD seemed to get the best result. Sorry, it's pitch dark here (I'm in the UK so it's gone 8pm) so I can't get a photo but I can try tomorrow if you still need it, just let me know.

We R Memory Keepers is the brand I bought, and like you, I had to really work to get the second one in. I think I squeezed really hard to do the second one, but at any rate, I was not happy with how much of it showed. If you have time to take a pic of yours that would be great. In the meantime, I will try it again and not squeeze as hard and see how that does. Thank you for responding.

OK, here's my experiment. The photo shows the front of the second eyelet on the left and the first eyelet with the second one set through it on the right. I found that if I squeezed too hard with the CAD, the hole shape distorted.

I think the issue is that the second eyelet splays out rather than rolling down, IYSWIM. I'd be kind of surprised if the SU! ones don't do the same as it seems likely it's doing it because the first eyelet means it's up against a hard surface which affects how it can move but I haven't seen a close-up of anyone's results with the SU! ones so I don't know for sure.

I wonder whether you could get less of the second eyelet's "squished bit" showing by having the whole thing go through a thicker layer? So putting a small piece of chipboard behind your paper before you punch the hole and set the first eyelet, for example. If you had two layers of paper, like you would in a bag arrangement, you could sandwich the chipboard between so it wouldn't show at all.

HTH some!
