burned batik vs embossing
 

I'm not sure I understand how burned batik is different from embossing. I realize that you are supposed to heat the EP until it soaks into the paper (hence the burn part), but it seems to achieve the same effect as just regular heating of EP. Is it just that it looses its shine? Or is there some other effect that I am not noticing in the pictures?

I think they call it "burned" because you are overheating the EP and going beyond the stopping point of regular heat embossing. It doesn't just lose its shine, it flattens out and soaks into the cardstock.

Do you use SU cardstock when you do your regular embossing? It shouldn't soak through the cardstock when you emboss. Maybe you already heating it a bit too long.

Sorry, I wasn't clear. When I said it 'achieves the same effect', I just meant that the embossed area (burned or otherwise) resists the color, so it looks the same whether your emboss correctly (not soak through) or burn it. So I wasn't sure (1) what the purpose was for heating it extra, nor (2) why it was considered batik?
