Brayer technique
Does anyone know how Michelle Zindorf (or anyone else) gets the irregular edge of ink off of the brayer? I keep trying but mine keeps laying a perfect line of ink down and I like the irregular edge for blending.

are you talking about faux tearing? if so, this is how you do it. you take a regualar piece of paper and tear it down the middle. you then align the ripped paper on your cardstock and run your inked brayer over the paper. you can also keep the ripped piece of paper on the cardstck and stamp images. this is a reallly cool technique

I'm not sure but it looks to me like she is brayering off a lot of the ink onto her scrap paper before she brayers on the card.

I believe the scattered effect is done with a sponge.

I am not really sure how Michelle does it (and she does a fantastic job of it - I hope she'll reply to your post also!) but when I use a brayer, I roll the edge of the brayer on a piece of scrap paper a few times to get rid of the pool of ink on the end so it blends better. Basically, I hold the brayer at a 45 degree angle to the paper and make a few short strokes on both edges and check to make sure the ink has come of the edge before using the brayer on my project. Does that make sense?
I understand what you're talking about - if you don't do something about it it seems like you always get unsightly lines from the extra ink that wants to pool at the edges of your brayer! Hope that helps! (and also hoping Michelle will reply also! :D) |
I actually just sent her an email asking her this, so if she replies to me there and does not reply to this post, I will post her reply here so we will all know how she does that. I just love the look of that. Her classes are so scattered there is no way we can all get to one and this is one way we can all share in her beautiful technique.

It looks to me like she doesn't fully ink the brayer. Maybe only roll it a couple of times to get those lines on it from the edges of the stamp pad. Hopefully, she will respond!

ok, she responded to me and said to try not to put any downward pressure on my brayer. I tried but it didn't work. Guess I will just have to practice the technique.

Let me know if any of you have any luck with this...and I will do the same. I will try this weekend. I did make a card with my brayer....my first attempt....it is on my blog if you want to take a peek....didn't turn out too bad...

I had trouble with this as well at first but I am nothing if not stubborn and kept at it. I found you have to ink only a portion of the brayer ,one side, brayer off the hard edge on scrap them move to card and brayer brayer brayer brayer the more times you roll the smoother it becomes. At first it doesn't appear to move the ink much but the more you "work it in" the smoother it becomes.
