Brayer help?

I've read the brayer based tutorial's and have been out to get myself a brayer as I got so excited about giving this a shot.

Problem is now.. I can't seem to make it work! I rol the colour all over the brayer, but then when I roll I only get 1cm colour, then no colour, then colour again... even though there's colour right round the brayer?

I tried different surfaces (in case the surface was lumpy?)... hard surfaces of different typs, no luck, soft crinkles the paper. ave a bought the wrong brayer? It's hard rubber? I've tried pigment and dye inks... I'm lost. Please help!

Try putting even pressure on the brayer with two fingers (first two - index and middle - spread like a V on either side of the handle) while holding the handle with your thumb and last two fingers.

Kinda like a Peace sign.

Does that help at all????;)

Christine... thanks for the tip.. It has little finger indents on my brayer just where you described...it's still pretty blotchy. It seems like perhaps my ink isn't tacky enough? perhaps my inks are all running out at the same time. everyone else seems to be getting bold colours. I'll keep persisting ... :) thanks again!

It sounds like the entire roller is not fully inked - slowly roll the brayer across the ink pad pick it up a do it again. Don't roll so fast that the roller spins when its not going across the ink pad. When it spins freely you really don't know what part of brayer has ink and which does not. The entire roller needs a even coating of ink so there is no break in color.

i tried the different way of reinking and changed to use glossy cardstock (don't know if this is a pre requisite?) but it worked just right!! thanks to the both of you for your help! :) now just need to practice my blending!

thankyou!!

yey - I am glad it is working better. Some paper takes a lot more ink than others I have found and glossy is easier to brayer. Blending is a learned skill for sure.
