Background watercoloring

I've been looking for info on putting in a background color around a stamped image because I can't seem to do it right. I'm trying to add a shadowing or background color around my main image using watercolor pencils and then blending with a wet brush, but it doesn't look natural, just messy. The cards in the gallery look like paintings and I'd like to incorporate some of that look into my cards. Any tips on technique would be appreciated.

I'm not sure exactly what you mean, but if it is what I am thinking, it is probably done with Watercolor crayons and an Aqua painter. The watercolor crayons blend much better and look more natural than watercolor pencils.
