I just went to a class where we did a pretty tie-dyed card using a brayer and one of those stamp pads that has multiple colors in it (is it called a Kaleidescope pad). We ran the brayer over the pad and holding one end of the brayer on the center of a piece of glossy card stock, thumped the brayer around the card stock gradually filling in the entire piece. Of course you are limited to the colors in the pad you are using but it was actually kind of neat. I hope you understand what I am desribing. Then when our tie-dye piece was done, we used black Staz-on ink to stamp an image directly on top of it.
