I've used Fabrico Ink pads by Tsukineko and my Craft Stampin' Up! pads to stamp fabric. I love them both, but they do need to be heat set to set the ink into the fabric.
A trick my grandmother gave me many years ago was to also was a new item with a cup of white vinegar to help set in the colors. I do this with my stamped fabric on the first wash and it works every time.

Wink More info

A friend stamps beautiful plain white silk (probably synthetic) scarves with SU craft ink. I've also stamped t-shirts with this. Great tip about the vinegar!
