5x7 Card Box Help!

I need to find the precise measurements for a 5x7 card box with lid. I'm making teacher gifts and I want them to be perfect! If anyone can help it would be much appreciated!

What depth do you want it to be?
And is it to be 5x7 finished size or to contain 5x7 cards?
If it's to contain cards, my rule of thumb is to add 1/4-1/2" extra to your measurements to give you the base size, depending on how much extra space you want.
And then you add twice the height to the measurements.

So if you're adding 1/2" extra space that gives you 5 1/2 x 7 1/2.
Then if you want them to be one inch high you add two inches - 7 1/2 x 9 1/2.
Cut the same size for the base, but trim off a fraction from one side and one end - about 1/8". T
Score 1" in from all the edges and make your box and lid.
If you want it shallower or deeper just adjust the measurements.

Sabrina, thanks for sharing your "formula" for making boxes. I've made a few of different sizes, and I know it's not rocket science, but it can be confusing if you don't have the exact measurements from a tutorial.

I especially like your tip about taking a little bit, 1/8", off the piece to be used for the base. Some of the ones I've made didn't allow for that, and the lid was difficult to put on and take off as a result.
