TLC570 ~ Dry Embossing with Stencils ~ {01/25/2016}

Happy Monday, everybody! It's my first challenge of the new year.
I'm sure that most of us, by now, have at least one stencil in our stash, so this is your chance to put it to a new use; we are going to stretch our stencils and Dry Emboss with Stencils.


Looking on YouTube I found several different sandwich possibilities.
For the Big Shot, you can use any of the following.
Base platform, Tab 1, regular cutting pad, thin mouse mat, stencil, cardstock, thin mouse mat, regular cutting pad.

If you have the Sizzix Impression pad, you can use the following sandwich in the Big Shot:
Base platform, Tab 1, regular cutting pad, silicone shim, stencil, cardstock, Impression pad.

Another option, this worked really well for me, was the following:
Base platform, Tabs 1 and 2, cutting pad, a piece of felt larger than your card, card, stencil, and second cutting pad.

For a Cuttlebug:
A plate, stencil, paper, silicone shim, cardstock as required for extra shims, 2 B plates. (I don't have a Cuttlebug, so I couldn't verify this one).


An extra option, you can ink your stencil and stamp your card with it as in the Stencil Monoprint tutorial, and then when it is dry you can emboss it with the stencil still in place. This will give a letterpress look, as on my bird tag which I turned into a card. Or you can emboss, and then add colour to the raised area with the stencil still in position.

Notes: I tried with a Dreamweaver's stencil - it embossed very well BUT I felt the stencil was a bit curved afterwards, so do this only at your own risk.
If you don't have any plastic stencils, don't want to risk a metal one and still want to play along - make your own stencil by cutting or punching shapes from a piece of thin cardstock.

There's a little more detail in the linked post, but this is what Rebekah used:
A plate, B plate, stencil, paper, rubber, shims, then b plate run through.
Each cuttlebug will use different shims, mine takes 2 for this, also the quality of paper makes a difference, if I use Georgia Pacific, it comes out light, if I use Gina K luxury white, it comes out more pronounced.

Thanks for the video, Sabrina! In looking through my BS supplies, it appears I have both of the extra mats she shows, so looks like I will be able to try this without too much fiddling around with sandwiches - yay! I have meetings today but hope to be back later and have a chance to play with this fun challenge : )

Sabrina- awesome challenge, thanks! I needed something to finish this vegetable card- and your dry embossing idea was just right- added a gingham/twine combo for my embellishment along with some purple washi tape. Here's Fresh Vegetables- dry embossed with a rolling jelly jar on my inked ef.

Well..I will have to try again. I used the sandwich for the Big Shot & it not only shredded the card stock, it broke the plastic stencil into a bunch of little pieces.

Oh my - I am SO sorry that people are having trouble. If I could replace your stencils I surely would. I tested two of the sandwiches for the Big Shot personally before listing them - I didn't have mouse mats to try the first one. And Dina even mentioned this in last week's Weekly Inkling as an extra use for stencils, although not with any sandwich listings.

Sallie has a recommendation that for a better impression, misting lightly with water (and I know some use alcohol) can help.

No worries, Sabrina! Misting is a good idea..I've used it when I'm embossing w/ a plastic canvas (the kind you find in the cross stitch section) & that's what I finally had to resort to here. Those are quite a bit tougher than stencils & also flexible

Now I just have to go make something w/ it.

For my sandwich and my Cuttlebug, I used A plate, B plate, cardstock scrap, rubber shim, cardstock, stencil, two pieces of cardboard, B plate. Not the best, but it was the fourth combination I tried. You have to look closely, but I was able to get some embossing. Here's my card:

I started out with a dry embossed background, using a Sizzix die with woven lines- added a evergreen and floral wreath- fussy cut to the right size- and added a roses and leaves printed card overlay. For my browns, I used a floral top border of washi tape, and a gold and brown gathered fabric tie/pink button combo. Used green and pink on my left side border, thanks to the floral washi tape I choose. My sentiment comes from a Taylored Expressions kitchen set. Here's You Warm My Heart

I just ran a plastic stencil through my Cuttlebug using the sandwich Sabrina listed and got a fairly good embossed pattern. I think a lot depends upon the thickness of the stencil, card stock, and shims you use.
