I haven't seen this technique before. I love my prismas and gamsol. I can hardly wait to try it.

Wink Finally able to upload my crazy attempt at this!

I’ve set myself a goal – to make a card or other project for each daily challenge. As a relatively “new” stamper, I don’t exactly have a wide assortment of stamps, so sometimes I have to, well, stretch. This was one of those times. To be honest, I didn’t just stretch, I took “liberties” with just about every aspect of this challenge – but I think the end result is pretty okay.

I wanted to try this technique on a mat for a photograph I took of my friend Lisa’s mom. While I didn’t have a stamp that fit with the design I wanted, I did have a stencil. So instead of stamping the design, I traced it with a light colored (I happened to use pink, for no other reason than it was handy….) pencil. Then I used another stencil that had individual flowers in multiple sizes to place the flowers on the design.

Now of course, I didn’t have any OMS handy, so I tried Goo Gone. It worked okay, actually, except for one major problem; doing this in my studio, even with the windows wide open, gave me a headache after about 10 minutes. My dogs abandoned me after 20 minutes. I decided that they were the canaries in the coal mine and I bailed on that attempt myself. So my first effort went into the trash, which was double bagged and deposited in the garage. I had no baby oil, and I was not willing to roust my very DH from a well deserved nap to drive to Wal-Mart for me (I’m not lazy, LOL – I’m disabled and no longer able to drive myself, which is a MAJOR pain at times like this….). I hunted around and found some body oil. I figured baby oil, body oil, could they be that different?

Ultimately, I made this mat using some of each of both my Prismacolor and Staedtler colored pencils and Lancome’s “Aroma Tonic”, a citrus-scented body oil that I use when I give DH backrubs. I have to say, it worked really, really well, and the fragrance sure beats Goo Gone. I had to play with it a little to get the hang of it since it's a little thinner than Goo Gone, but I found that if I dipped the tip of the pencil and just gave it about a half minute to a minute to “soften” the first time I dipped, the color went on very smoothly and blending was very easy. I used one shade of deep aqua, white, and yellow (Prismacolor), and two shades of green (Staedtler) for the flowers, and metallic gold and white (Prismacolor) for the scrolls. I tried to use gold ink for the spatters and played around with that for as much time as it took to color this in, but had no luck. I finally gave up and used metallic gold Ceramcoat acrylic paint to spatter the little dots.

Now I don’t usually subscribe to the theory that rules were made to be broken, but here’s my submission for the Monday challenge #TLC184, which was not stamped, not done on a card, and not done with OMS either.

Well, I couldn't get the technique to work with the tools I have, so I finally just colored the black CS with water color pencils. Here's what I ended up with.

Here are 2 cards I made using the Black Magic instructions. I'm not sure I noticed much difference than if I hadn't dipped the pencils in the gamsol, tho.

This was a lot of fun- Would have been more fun if it could be done with colored pencils that weren't so spendy!

Such beautiful work you all do.

This didn't work for me at all. I did it with White SU Craft on Black CS. I colored the image with colored pencils. OK look.

Then 2nd image I dipped the pencils in Baby Oil first then colored. Got less color!

My pencils are very old and cheap non toxic thin lead coloring pencils. Do you think they are the problem?? Any tips appreciated.

I believe you can only use prismacolor pencils for this technique to work.

Thanks for the reply. The first post (instructions) said I could use colored pencils but I'm guessing no.

What exactly are prismacolor pencils?? I've got J's coupons...

'Prismacolor' is just the brand name. They are very expensive pencils, but you can buy them in small quantities. They are sold at Michaels and any art supply store. I bought mine on EBAY for $50 for a HUGE set of over 120 pencils (which normally would have been $140 at Michaels). But I believe you can buy a set of 12 at Michaels for about $25.00.

Here is my ATC card using this technique. I didn't have any smooth black cardstock (only Bazzill) so it didn't work out quite as well. Now to find some smooth black cardstock.
