TLC968 - Fossil Background - 09/11/2023
 

This was a VSN from Melody a few years back. But I think her pdf suffered in the great link disaster of 2020 because I couldn't access it when I went looking for it a few weeks back. At the time I was in a hurry to get my card made, so I just looked elsewhere on line and made a mental note to feature it here with a working link. With more time I dug around the site a bit and ended up finding the same tutorial here that I had found elsewhere a couple of months back. I've added the pdf at the bottom of this post - posted in 2006.

The original tutorial uses glossy card. I have plenty of that, so that's what I used for my sample.
For those of you who don't, I experimented with regular card and photo paper, and also the back of photo paper as I have seen people saying that they are using that with alcohol inks.
The back of photo paper doesn't work for this, don't try it! Right now it's still wet - if it does dry, it will be an interesting background for something some time. But you will get acceptable results with either photo paper or regular card. Personally I like the glossy best, but that's just me.
I'm still short on time these days so I just stuck to distress inks. You will need your pads to be slightly juicy or else you might find you need to mist the page protector a bit before you press the two sides together.

Essentially you start with two pieces of cardstock, a page protector or similar cut open and two coordinating ink pads
Smoosh one colour of ink onto each side of the opened-up page protector, making sure to cover an area the size of your card base.
Fold the page protector over and press with your fingers so that the two colours of ink mingle.
Open up, and lay your two pieces of cardstock down, so that the right (front, glossy) side of the bottom piece is in contact with the page protector, and when you close the page protector over again the right (front, glossy) side of the top piece will be in contact with the page protector. Brayer or use your preferred method to make sure there is a good transfer of ink to paper

(ETA - after several hours this was still not dry. I can see it would work with alcohol inks, but definitely not with water-based).

I was inspired by your Whale Hello card Sabrina- I DIY'd it with the substitution of waxy threader (Thread Magic) applied with a finger repeatedly dragged across my plain cardstock in place of glossy paper and a cut open repurposed sandwich bag instead of a page protector to spread color to my background. I just got this cute shark stamp set which I used in place of a whale, and added a second shark and a few tropical fish. Finished with a punny sentiment. Here's You Are Jawsome

Thank you for showcasing this neat technique! I had not tried it before, and I guess one of my colors was juicer than the other, but I still love how it looks on the matte photo paper I used, there's a hint of the green, at least, in places.

I couldn’t resist trying this and had these Christmas dies in mind. I made two cards.
I used Distress Oxide inks.

I tried glossy cardstock and memento dye inks and it has not dried at all.... I will try distress inks
