TLC78- Pastel Embossing

**** if you are reading this on Sunday, please don't post to the gallery til Monday! Thank you! ******
This week's challenge comes from LodiChick/Tracy. Thank you Tracy, and thank you to ladydian!
She found this awesome One-Sheet-Wonder in the ladydian's gallery:
//www.splitcoaststampers.com/gallery/showphoto.php?photo=329556&si=serene%20sunflower&what=allfields
and the cards made from it:
//www.splitcoaststampers.com/gallery/showphoto.php?photo=329562&cat=500&ppuser=50505
From the comment section of the OSW: All images were embossed with White EP. I then coloured with pastels. Over top the pastels I added a dash of coloured marker to add intesity.
Here's more from Tracy's PM:
She called it pastel embossing, using pastels over an image that is embossed with white EP on black or dark cardstock. It is a bit different than pencil over or chalk board. I tried one last night for my host club and the colors are more vibrant than the other techniques.
When I did mine I used a blender pen with the pastels and it doesn't seem to rub off.
I can't wait to see your creations with this fun technique. Here's mine:

What she said!!!!!!! The challenge is up! Woo Hoo!

Grandmama BoBo 08-20-2006 07:21 PM

Well, I came on to see who was stalking, and no one was around. Then the challenge was up. Just wanted you to know that I won't be around for a few days. We are going camping in the morning. Don't worry as I'm taking a lot of my stamping stuff as I have lots of cards to make, and a lot of RAKS to get out. I am behind, but plan to get caught up this week. The trouble is, when I get all my supplies in the trailer, I may not have room for food or any of the necessary stuff. See you girls when I get home.

raduse 08-20-2006 07:37 PM

Well, this is early. Came online also to check out stalkers and VSN chatter and I find this. Cool!

lbirus 08-20-2006 07:40 PM

Woo Hoo! I'm back from my gut wrenching experience of taking my son to college (the first one) in Arkansas, which is 1100 miles away from me. I sure need a little stamping therapy now. I'll have to give this a shot when I get back from work tomorrow.
Thanks for posting the challenge so I can think about it tomorrow and keep my mind off my missing kid!

J-Bo 08-20-2006 08:28 PM

I don't have any pastels :( No playing for me.

notimetostamp 08-20-2006 09:14 PM

OK, I tried to do this -- I just have the image done, not the card -- and I don't think it's working for me -- I white embossed, then I colored over that with chalks using a blender pen -- and it is rubbing off, kind of smearing onto the edges off the image onto the black paper -- I have to be so careful not to touch it -- what am I doing wrong? I'm really thinking this is not going to dry on top of the embossed image???? Any suggestions --

pammyrn 08-20-2006 09:30 PM

wow, Beth what a great challenge, my first one after being gone off challenges for a month. Woo Hoo, I can't wait.

lacyquilter 08-20-2006 10:12 PM

Oooo, an early challenge! I will see what I can come up with in the morning. Right now I NEED to be in bed. So that's where I'm heading. Looks like fun! Thanks for posting early, Beth.

rhondag 08-20-2006 10:25 PM

Hmmmm.....I wonder if this would work with clear ep and white craft ink as a substitution? (I don't have white ep) I think I'll wait to hear about other results too since Sharon had a problem with it.

Gorgeous challenge Beth, Tracy and ladydian!

DawnL 08-21-2006 03:42 AM

looks awesome Beth...thanks Tracy!

LodiChick 08-21-2006 04:32 AM

I thought I would post the one I did last week with my host club. I did another for the challenge and I used vanilla EP on Chocolate chip, that came out nice too.
I am not sure what to tell you about the smearing. Are you embossing first? I had no problems with my chalks smearing but you do need to be careful about going too much over onto the dark cardstock because it does show up. I did try marker over the chalk and that worked okay, I used the blender pen to well...blend. Maybe just give it a minute to dry.

I'm back from vacation and I can't wait to get started on this challenge! Mondays are usually my favorite challenges!

Toy 08-21-2006 04:46 AM

Thanks for the challenge, Beth and for the inspiration Tracy! I've never tried this technique before.. it was fun! I'll definitely be doing this one again!

Here's what I made:

TFL!

Peace :D

lacyquilter 08-21-2006 04:52 AM

The ones already posted are absolutely gorgeous! What a wonderful way to add color. OK, I gotta quit lookin and go stamp my own.

kerryp 08-21-2006 04:56 AM

Thanks for the great challenge Beth! I just looked at my neglected chalks yesterday and realized that I haven't touched them in over a year! (The entire set of new color ones from '05 are still in the ziploc bag that they came in!)

OK, I let it sit overnight -- it was still smearing this morning -- I sprayed with a fixative and that solved the problem. Here's my attempt:

WOW - and I thought I was early this morning...LOL

Jerri Kay 08-21-2006 05:00 AM

Great challenge Beth and early too, I didn't think to check yesterday. Hope to be able to try this today.

cjf&cjfsmommy 08-21-2006 05:03 AM

What a beautiful outcome from this technique. I'm having some problems with my colors coming out not so vibrant. Here's my 'duh' question of the day, are you chalking the EP before heating? I embossed the white EP then added my chalk w/ a dauber and the colors are pretty but muted. I'm still happy with it, but I'll just try it w/ my blender pen next. TFL!

Need a little clarification...

Do you just use the dry chalks on the embossing, or do you color them on with the blender pen?

I believe that she used the blender pen to apply the chalks to the EP after it was heated and cooled.

golly 08-21-2006 05:53 AM

Here is mine, I thought about sending this one to the trash too. I really don't work well with chalks. The chalk kept rubbing off. http:////www.splitcoaststampers.com/...0&ppuser=70441
I will try something else.

Runamok 08-21-2006 06:34 AM

I don't have any white EP :( ! I may experament, and I may make a Jo-Annes run when it opens. These are too pretty too just look at wihtout playing along!

Pinky 08-21-2006 06:47 AM

My pastel colors are not showing up on the scan...how do you make the pastels more vivid? I need to practice on this one for sure...

arinstamps 08-21-2006 06:47 AM

I tried mine on burgundy with white craft & clear EP because I don't have white EP. I didn't have a very white surface to color and the pastels did rub off a little so it doesn't seem as vibrant as the sample but I'm happy with it IRL.

here's mine: Now I'm off to do some errands. I'll be back later to comment on the others. Great work everybody!!

What a fun way to brighten dark papers--I love this technique, but then again I really enjoy using my heat gun. Demo shoebox swap tonight and this will be perfect. Made a Christmas Card with Bud Basics, it is so versatile.

This is a very cool technique! I'm going to play with it and use it for both of my hostess clubs this month! Great idea!

I think it needs to be done with a solid image - the outlines don't seem to take it as well. I tried it with Looks Like Spring and it came out beautifully.

Stampernmore 08-21-2006 08:05 AM

Can't wait to get started on this one!
