Default TLC685 ~ Pen Painting ~ {4/9/18}

Hello Technique Lovers!

Today's technique comes from a process that I learned from Lydia using an Elegant Writer calligraphy pen. Do not fear -- if you don't have one of those pens, some others will work, and there is an alternate way to be able to play along.

We are going to do PEN PAINTING today. The Elegant Writer has a unique ink that will separate when mixed with water, giving you different colors of ink without adding any color at all.

Basically, after you stamp in your choice of ink (you will want to use black fade resistant, water resistant ink if you're using a black outline, or a distress ink (or regular dye) ink if you want your image's outline to blend with the pen), trace over the stamped image with the Elegant Writer pen, and pull the color out, using a little bit of water and a brush. You will see different results every time, depending on the ink choice and amount of water.

You can see the technique in Lydia's video below.

My sample: HOPE

Keyword: TLC685

I have posted thumbnail samples below as well, one of mine already in my gallery, and several of Lydia's.

If you don't have an Elegant Writer, feel free to use a watercolor marker or pencil to trace over your stamped image, and pull some color from that. If you have a black marker that gets the same effect that is not the Elegant Writer, please post the brand so we can see what other pens work like this, with the ink separation!

I hope you have fun with this technique!
I thought for sure I had posted this technique in a previous TLC, but I couldn't find it, so my apologies if you do! I might be losing my mind

Here is my Soft Watercolor Pen Painting card and ATC. Soft Watercolor Pen Painting and ATC by ruby-heartedmom - at Splitcoaststampers

I used a black Vis a Vis marker--the old transparency pens. It doesn't have as many pretty colors in the gradation, but it does have gradations.

I've always enjoyed Heather's Vintage Watercolour tutorial - doing it without adding any other colour than from the pen should make it even easier and faster, so in spite of a very busy work week, I hope to unwind tonight by trying this. Thanks, Judy.

Great challenge, Judy with this technique. Your sample is beautiful....looks like a charcoal sketch. Remember doing this technique, and it's fun to see the colors emerge from the black pen. Will be doing a card soon.

My old elegant writers are nearly dry! I'm surprised that I got this much color from them. Here's only today

Mine seemed to have dried out a lot too . Took several attempts to get something I was more or less happy to mail, here it is: TLC685 Butterfly Sympathy

I haven't used my Elegant Writer for ages. It's a bit dried up but I still got some results from it:

I have tried this several times this week using different pens. I finally got an Elegant Writer to give it a try and this is the best result I've gotten but I'm not happy with it. Suggestions?

That is an outstanding technique. The markers must be before my crafty life. I will look them up

Catherine, I think that's the ideal look for those pens. That's an image with a lot of open space, though, so it would be hard to add colour to it all simply by dragging it out from the line. I guess you could add some very soft watercoloring, or else change the idea that you have in your mind's eye and work on a vintage-style card which will suit the image as is. Add some corrugated card for the WT? Or text papers, and some trailing foliage... Because I love colouring I rarely use uncoloured images but I always think how good they look when I see them in the gallery.

Thank you, Sabrina, for your suggestion. I went ahead and made the truck one into a card but also tried one with a vintage car:
