TLC370 ~ Faux Patina ~ (03/26/12)

5 Attachment(s)
Good day to you, stampers! :D

Gather your supplies and get ready to take on your foe: FAUX PATINA!
I LOVE the results of this, and although the instructions will look lengthy, it goes fairly quickly (trust me)!

Here is my sample:
~ Music of the Soul ~

My four layers of color are (in order): Sahara Sand, Taken With Teal, Always Artichoke, Soft Suede; THEN clear embossing pad and gold embossing powder.

When uploading, please use KEYWORD TLC370 (no spaces!).

And here is the gallery where you can see everyone's creations:
TLC370 GALLERY

Instructions (thumbnail photos to match main steps are below):
1. Start by making a background using an embossing folder and a light colored ink with the Inspired By Belleek Pottery technique (I used Sahara Sand).
2. Sponge on your next color layer to bring out the embossed pattern (I used Taken With Teal).
3. Add a contrasting layer on top (I used Always Artichoke).
4. Add a final darker color over all (I used Soft Suede).
5. Take your embossing pad (I used VersaMark) and lightly brush the pad over the raised areas.
6. Emboss with a metallic powder (I used Ranger's Queen's Gold). If you get too much of the design covered with embossing powder (you only want the gold here and there), just brush off with a cloth or brush (I used a dry baby wipe) before embossing. Heat.
7. VOILA! Done!

I hope you will try this fun and beautiful background! There are MANY color combinations to try - you can use colors close to my sample's layers, or make up your own combination. Patinas come in many colors - grays, reds, rusts, greens, browns, blues, yellows, all metallics....try a variety of layers!
Work from lightest ink to darkest. My patina look in my sample is probably on the light side. You can have some very dark, rich colors! Just think of the different colors of metal objects you have seen~

Angie Leach was my inspiration in learning this technique! Thanks, Angie!

Judy, this creates such a beautiful vintage background. Off to put my thinking cap on and make one.

My brayer is missing and I just can't find it. I tried the technique with just sponging on the color, but it didn't look very good. RATS!

Karen Wallace 03-26-2012 01:09 AM

Wow this is fantastic, I left some love on the gallery and can't wait to try this.

You were right, Judy....this is a fun technique and not that hard to do. I will be using it again. I went the "light" route since I was creating a spring card. I also combined your challenge with Jen's CAS for today. Thanks for another great Monday lesson!

Thanks Trish and Susan for the tips and link. And thanks Judy for a real challenge for me! I may have to try this technique again. I think I needed to use more ink when I was sponging.

Here's my card that actually looks a little better irl.

TLC370 Love Butterfly

Thanks for the cool challenge! I used a green-gray paint sample card for my background, and SU's Loads of Love for my message. The gel pen colored butterfly is from Memory Box. My embossing folders are Cuttlebug's Just My Type, and I finished with silver embossing powder. Here's Love Butterfly.

TLC370 Love Buttons

For my 2nd try, I used sandpaper before I applied my stronger colored ink- that did the trick! I used Cuttlebug's Just My Type EFs on a recycled note card- and sewed some mini buttons on. Here's Love Buttons

Greywolf 03-26-2012 04:38 PM

I've really enjoyed see all the beautiful cards being made with the faux patina technique. I just had to give it a second try - especially since I bought a new ef today. ;)

Second faux patina

smadson 03-26-2012 05:52 PM

Okay, Judy I tried the new technique! It was easy and fun, but not as pretty as I wanted it to be. I will try another time with different colors. I used same colors as youd did except for the first one. I used a light color like you suggested- barely banana was what I had. Here it is.
Thank you for inpsiring me to do something new.

Thank you!
Sharon

Judy, I LOVE this technique! Although my results were varied, it feels like one of those techniques were there is no "wrong" result. Here are my cards, maybe I'll have another one to add later, although my table is a disaster area. No idle neatness here! :D

How exciting to discover that my faux patina technique is featured on this challenge! Woohoo and thank you! It was so much fun coming up with it. I had never seen anything like it before and I loved experimenting with all the colors! The projects I've seen on here in the gallery look fabulous! Keep 'em coming! Love it!

Loved looking at the cards in this challenge so thought I would have a go, Im not a hundred percent happy with it as Im not a stamper so dont use inks that much, found it quite hard but thought I would post my effort anyway.

For the recent VSN one of the challenges was to try a new technique...this is the one I found and I loved making them. I turned it into a class for a group of gals and they loved theirs too! Your directions are fabulous, easy to follow and be successful with! thanks!
